David Donaldson Harvey Jr., age 87 of Rome, GA, died on Saturday, February 3, 2024. He was born on October 2, 1936 in Rome, GA, in the shadow of the City Clocktower. He loved and served the Rome community his entire life.
David was preceded in death by his father, David Donaldson Harvey, Sr., and his mother, Alline Burney Harvey; his in-laws, Warren Monroe Gilbert and Mary Harbin Gilbert; and his brother-in-law, Fred White. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Susan Cuttino Gilbert Harvey; his sister, Ludie Harvey White; his brothers and sisters in-law, Peter and Suzy Gilbert; and Edith and Larry Ethridge; three children: Mary Gilbert Harvey Beaver (Walt), Charlotte, NC, Katherine Burney Harvey Kenum (Tim), Denver, CO, and David Donaldson Harvey III (Jaynee), Atlanta, GA; nine grandchildren: Christopher Burns Beaver (Sara), Andrew David Beaver (Caroline), Clay Harbin Beaver (Monique), Burns Gilbert Beaver, Harrison David Kenum, Carson Gilbert Kenum, Ryan David Harvey, May Elizabeth Harvey, and Wesleigh Erin Harvey; three great-grandchildren: Warren William Beaver, Banks Haywood Beaver, and Walter Burns Beaver III, and many nieces and nephews.
David graduated from Darlington School in 1954. He attended Georgia Tech on a Naval ROTC scholarship and graduated in 1958 with a degree in Industrial Management.
David served as a flight officer in the U.S. Navy for six years. He was the first Naval Aviation Observer (Navigator) designated by the U.S. Navy. His duty stations included Okinawa, Japan and Coronado, California. After the Navy years the Harveys returned to Rome where David joined Northwestern Mutual Financial Network in 1964 and received the American College’s CLU designation in 1970. He served as a Senior Financial Representative and provided over 50 years of service to his clients and to the Company as a member of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors.
David was an active member of the Rome Rotary Club for 60 years and is a Paul Harris Fellow. He served on the Rome City Commission from 1969 to 1980, the last year as Chairman. He was twice Senior Warden of Saint Peter’s Episcopal Church, served on the vestry, and sang in the choir for 35 years.
He served in leadership roles on numerous boards of community organizations. He was Chairman of the Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce, the Rome-Floyd County Unified Land Development Code Committee and a SPLOST Advisory Committee. He served as a member of two Rome-Floyd 20/20 Steering Committees and served as Secretary of the South Rome Redevelopment Corporation. He was involved with many other organizations including the Jaycees, the United Way, and the Darlington and Georgia Tech alumni associations. He and Susan raised their family Between the Rivers, and when they moved to the Spires he served as a member of the Residents Council, sang in the Spires choir, and greeted every dog by name.
In 2009, David and Susan Harvey received the Governors’ Award from the Heart of the Community Board of Governors.
David enjoyed golf, music, reading, traveling with his family, and attending every Georgia Tech sporting event possible. He scored his first hole in one at age 80, followed by another the same year.
He loved his incredible wife, his family, his men’s prayer group, his friends, St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, the City of Rome, his beloved country, and above all else, his God.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday February 9, 2024 at 1 pm at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Rome, GA, with a reception following in Daniel Hall.
