Mr. Shannon was born in Rome, GA. November 13, 1926, son of the late Claude Dean Shannon and Lee Etta Ellison Shannon. He was also preceded in death by his wife Mrs. Alma Kerce Shannon, and three sisters; Marjorie Shannon Boggs, Nina Camp, and Margaret Shannon.
Mr. Shannon was a long time resident of Rome. He was a member of Second Avenue Baptist Church where he joined and was baptized in 1948 and has served on various committees throughout the years such as Chairman of the deacon board, the trustee’s, the pastoral search committee, Sunday School Director, and helped spearhead and organize the Home Bound Ministry. Over the past five years he lived in Fayetteville and attended Covenant Presbyterian Church when he could. He also faithfully attended a men’s Bible study every week for five years at the Fayetteville Chic-Fil-A Dwarf house. He served his country proudly as a Hospital corpsman in the United States Navy stationed in San Diego, California. He also loved to volunteer with Hospice as a sitter allowing family members of the patient a little time off. He worked for the Merck Company for 38 years as an executive professional drug representative. He also served as the District President of the Breakfast Rome Optimist Club and was the District Lt. Governor of the Georgia District of Optimist International.
Survivors include one son; Michael Van Shannon and his wife Connie of Ooltewah, TN., one daughter; Denise Alexander and her husband Marty of Fayetteville, GA., and one brother; Herschel Shannon of Winter Park, FL. Also surviving are five grandchildren; April Shannon Skinner and her husband Mark, Blake Alexander, Kelly Shannon Davie and her husband Colton, Brett Alexander, and Brooke Alexander. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.
A funeral service was held Wednesday February 13, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at the Second Avenue Baptist Church with Rev. Monty Stallins officiating. A private burial will take place Wednesday morning at Oaknoll Memorial Gardens. The family received friends Tuesday evening at Daniel’s Funeral Home February 12, 2013 from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family respectfully requests that memorial contributions be made to Second Avenue Baptist Church 823 East 2nd Ave. S.W. Rome, GA. 30161.
