Mr. Callahan was born in Rome, GA June 4, 1940. He was the son of the late Kirk F. Callahan and Mattie Hicks Callahan. He was also preceded in death by his brother, L.D. Callahan, sisters Frieda Callahan Ashmore and Brenda Callahan Dumas.
With his parent’s permission C.F. joined the United States Air Force and completed high school while stationed in Falmouth, Mass. While serving in Pakistan he never knew many years later his granddaughter Lauren would be so close to where he was while she served in Afghanistan in the US Air Force National Guard. After the service he worked for Fair-Child Hiller Airplane Company in Florida where Doug, Barry, and Brett were born. He moved his family to Rome and began working for and later became a partner with Horton Hardware Wholesalers selling hardware to the mom and pop Hardware stores across the area. Horton and company closed when Home Depot and Lowes started opening stores in the area. For five years he was the Belk receiving manager at Mt. Berry Square Mall. He made the statement “If you can’t beat them, join them” and worked for Home Depot for 18 years. He was also an elder and past chairman of the Board at First Christian Church here in Rome, the past President of the Rome Chapter 709 Experimental Aircraft Association, a past member of the Airport commission, a Board member of the Floyd County Airport Commission, and a member of the American Legion and the 120/140 Cessna Association. He loved God, his family, and his country. He spent many hours Hanger Flying and he loved walking the flight lines at Airshows and fly- in’s. Before purchasing his Cessna 120 he and his sons built an experimental airplane. He spent many hours flying both planes with his friends.
Survivors include his wife Carol Barton Callahan to whom he was married on October 27, 1979, sons, Doug Callahan of Rome, Brett (Kristie) Callahan of Cave Spring, and Barry (Lisa) Callahan of Rome. Also surviving are grandchildren Savanna (Matthew) Orebaugh of Cave Spring, Isaac Callahan of Rome, Blaire (Cory) Culver of Cedar Bluff, Alabama, Lauren Callahan and her fiance’ Keith, of Beaverton, Oregon, Lucas Callahan of Cedartown, Jessica Callahan, Megan Callahan, Ashley Callahan, Tristan Callahan and C.J. Callahan all of Rome and great-grandson Cohutta Culver due next month. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.
The family will receive friends Monday March 16, 2015 from 1 pm to 2 pm at Daniel’s Funeral Home. A funeral service will then be held at 2 pm in the Thomas B. Griffin Memorial chapel of Daniel’s with Rev. Craig McDonald officiating. The sons and grandsons of Mr. Callahan will be serving as pallbearers.
