Barbara Holt Brewster peacefully passed away on June 24, 2023, surrounded by her family after many months of declining health. She was a gentle, loving and radiant lady who fought a courageous battle!
Barbara was born on May 25, 1944 in Hagerstown Maryland, the daughter of James D. Holt and Jane Herring Holt. She had an older brother, Jimmy, who tragically passed away in childhood at the age of 8. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Ed and their three sons: Steve (Michelle}, Mark (Lauren}, and Craig and ten grandchildren: Abbie, Katie, Holt, Jackson, Pierce, Preslie Grace, Ellison, Griffin, Caroline, Davis and one great grandchild, Emmy, as well as several aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Barbara graduated from Savannah (GA} High School in 1962 and was a cheerleader and a class officer throughout high school. She graduated from the University of Georgia in 1966 with a degree in psychology. She was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. She met her husband, Ed, after walking out the back door of the sorority house for a blind date to attend the G-Day football
game. Ed's reaction was "Wow!" They fell in love immediately and married in Augusta on November 23, 1966 at the Church of the Good Shepherd. Barbara worked as an activities director in the Cleckley Building (psychiatric center) in Augusta and then as an elementary school teacher. Their first son, Steve, was born in 1968 during Ed's senior year in medical school, Mark was born in Warner Robins, GA while they were in the Air Force and Craig was born in Savannah, GA during Ed's radiology residency.
Barbara dedicated herself to motherhood, her three sons and husband. She was a loving and nurturing mother who was at the center of her boys lives serving as a T¬ball coach for Boys Club baseball, Cub Scout leader, and Darlington School volunteer who started the first Fall Festival as a project of Tiger Pride in the Lower School. She was constantly shuttling her boys to various sports practices and games. She loved every minute of it! Barbara also loved to host and celebrate holiday events, the most notable being Thanksgiving for the entire Brewster family which was held at their cabin at Lake Lahusage near Mentone, Alabama. She hosted many birthday parties and could pull off the best Easter egg hunts, where each child or grandchild could find the golden egg! Christmas Eve was also a masterpiece, especially with her oyster stew.
Barbara was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Rome and for many years secured teachers for the children's Sunday school. She enjoyed Bible studies at the church as well as the women's Bible study at First Baptist Church. She went on several mission trips to Mexico with her husband and participated with the members of FPC on a dental mission trip to Ukraine. She worked as a volunteer for many years at Good Neighbors Ministry and at the Community Kitchen. For the past few years, she has enjoyed driving around town with her friend, Cynthia Burnes, to hand out bags of food and water to the homeless.
When she wasn't filling her home with love and kindness, she was an avid gardener, and was constantly digging in the dirt in the gardens at their home. She loved to see the blooms of spring and the fruits of her labor! She loved her horses and enjoyed riding along the Coosa River. Barbara also enjoyed reading and attending her book clubs, and she cherished her many friends. She also enjoyed her garden club. Many years ago she and a friend won the "best in show" award, although their arrangement broke a few rules of the flower show. Barbara had a difficult time coloring within the lines even as a child! Barbara and Ed have enjoyed their church supper club friends for many years celebrating many special occasions. She also always looked forward to being with her friends for Wednesday lunch at Harvest Moon. She was also a member of the Floyd-Polk¬Chattooga Medical Alliance and a sustaining member of The Junior Service League.
Visitation will be held in the fellowship hall at First Presbyterian Church of Rome on Thursday, June 29 from 5:30-7:30pm. Barbara's ashes will be inurned on Friday, June 30, 2023 at 11am in a private family service at Myrtle Hill cemetery. A celebration of life service will be held in the sanctuary at First Presbyterian Church of Rome on Friday, June 30 at 1pm.
The family of Barbara Holt Brewster requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the building fund at First Presbyterian Church of Rome, Darlington School or Good Neighbors Ministry.
