Dear Lynn and family,
My wife, Laura, and I were deeply saddened to hear of Jim's passing. I worked with him for about six years on a long case. He was an invaluable counselor, advisor and source of wisdom and humor.  He was a real gentleman in every sense of the word. We will always remember his wry smile and semi-joking manner when approaching a difficult juncture. He was both the Field Marshall seeing the big picture and the foot soldier seeing all the important details - a rare man.

As a neighbor and friend of friends, I want to express my condolences. Although only a casual acquaintance, I have such a wonderful impression of Jim as a decent, happy and kind person. OMG! I'm still in shock and my heart is sad at such a great loss. Please know that my heartfelt prayers are with you Mrs. Weiss and your family.  I had the privilege of being a co-worker with Jim at Preston Gates. I enjoyed always talking with him and he always brightened up the hallway or when you walked in his office with that genuine smile!  May his soul and spirit rest in peace.

Dick and I are still in shock and can not even imagine how you must be feeling right now.  It certainly does not feel real that someone like Jim, so fit, so full of a love of life, who was so successful at combining his work and professional lives, could be gone from us. We keep thinking about our many wonderful times in Santa Fe, our terrific visit to you on the Vineyard, and how much we enjoyed your visit to us in Vermont, and we think about how we always expected there to be a next time.  We picture his big smile, his humor, his terrific talents, and the wonderful couple he made with you, and we know how terribly we will miss him.  When you are ready, we hope we can arrange other times to be with you and enjoy your company.  In the meantime, please do accept our condolences and shared sense of this deeply-felt loss. I do not know if you remember me, but my name is Marjorie Shaffer Victor.  Your brother, Marc, and I were in the same year in school, and you and Jim a few years behind.  Because of the age difference, I never got to know Jim but, after reading all that others have written about him in this book,  can tell he was a terrific guy. I am so saddened to hear the news of Jimmy's passing.  I cannot imagine how difficult this time must be for all of you, but I wish you the comfort of family and friends that I know surround you.   I was always touched by Jimmy’s gentle and kind manner and appreciated his sharp wit.  And it was so very clear that Jimmy adored his “girls”--there was a special light in his eyes and note of pride in his voice when he talked of each of you. Having worked with Jim in the Antitrust Division and kept up with his career in private practice (we were counsel for co-defendants in a recent MDL antitrust case), I know both his great lawyering and his personal attributes of friendship, loyalty and family. We will miss him.

I worked with Jim at Justice on the IBM Relief Task Force in 1980.  He was a great guy, and I am so terribly sorry for your loss.  Jim was fun and funny and sunny and bright, and a good friend to me.  He made coming to and being at work a joy, and that's a gift very few people have.

I knew and worked with Jim when he represented us at Delta Air Lines.  What a great professional and a great man he was.  I will always remember Jim as a kind and unpretentious man - the essence of a gentleman.  None of us can be sure why God makes these moves, but I know for certain that the legal world, Washington and the world in general will be a less civil place without Jim Weiss in it. I knew Jim from the couple of  years we overlapped at the Antitrust Division, where he was one of most able and well-liked members of the senior staff.  We worked together through the night once shortly after I joined the Division in 1983 and I learned right away that even under stress Jim was always thoughtful, calm, and gracious.  His untimely passing will shock and sadden all who knew him.

Dear Lynn,

Words can't express my shock at hearing of Jim's passing.  Nor can they alleviate the pain.

Jim was a kind, caring and decent man.   A fundamentally good and decent person.   A loving husband, father and son.

It was an honor to work antitrust matters with him, and it was a pleasure getting to know you guys over the years.  It was wonderful sharing things like Laurie Colwin novels (I'll never forget when I sent a copy of "A Big Storm Knocked it Over" to Jim to give you after we had this conversation in Santa Fe.  Jim responded back in two days that the writing was good but wasn't it a little "girly"? ).    

You guys were so nice and welcoming to us when we moved down to the DC area.  We'll miss the casual meals at Umberto's.  Nor am I sure that I'll ever be able to go to Cafe Mozart again.

What a horrible and shocking turn.
