William "Bill" Reed Wilkins, a remarkable man whose journey began on July 30, 1931, in North Platte, Nebraska, has left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew and loved him. Born to Lec and Irene Wilkins, he was raised in a loving home that nurtured his spirit and set the foundation for a life filled with adventure, dedication, and artistic expression.
During the Korean War, Bill's sense of duty and honor led him to join the Air Force, where he courageously served his country. His unwavering commitment continued as he soared through the skies with the Air National Guard, embodying the essence of a true aviator.
In a beautiful union, Bill married the love of his life, Sharon Rae Roggen, and together they embarked on a journey that would see them raise a loving family of five children. Bill's devotion to his family was a cornerstone of his identity, and his legacy lives on through his children: William, Robert, Kathryn, and Thomas. Although the family was touched by the loss of their youngest, Timothy, just one year ago, his spirit remains an integral part of their collective memory.
Bill's profound impact on family continued through generations, as he is survived by ten cherished grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, each a testament to his enduring love and influence.
His professional path led him to a successful and impactful career with IBM, a testament to his dedication and ingenuity. Settling in the serene landscapes of Indialantic and Melbourne Beach, Florida, he found solace by the water's edge and reveled in the beauty of his surroundings.
Beyond the realm of work, BIll's passions took him to new heights, both figuratively and literally. His love for aviation found expression as he piloted a Pitts Special and a Skybolt, gracing the skies with awe-inspiring aerobatics. From breathtaking displays over the beach to cross-country journeys to Oshkosh, his flights were a symphony of grace and skill that mesmerized onlookers.
Retirement introduced a new chapter in Bill's life as he turned to the canvas, discovering the world of painting. With each stroke of the brush, he translated his creativity onto the canvas, leaving behind a gallery of vibrant memories for his loved ones.
Yet, even in the face of life's challenges, Bill exhibited unwavering resilience. Throat cancer may have taken him from us, but it cannot diminish the radiant spirit he brought into our lives. On August 8, 2023, at the age of 92, William Reed Wilkins peacefully passed away in his home in Satellite Beach, surrounded by the warmth of his family's love.
Bill's presence will forever linger in the hearts of his cherished family, his friends, and all those who had the privilege of crossing paths with him. As we mourn his passing, let us also celebrate the legacy of a man who embraced life's adventures, pursued his passions with fervor, and left an indelible mark on the tapestry of our lives.
