Sherry was born September 5, 1954 in Durham, N.C. Her parents were Reuben William “Jimmy” York and Delores Ellis York. She was a happy, fun-loving child growing up in East Durham and learned to dance at an early age. Her family moved across town in her pre-teen years and she attended Carrington Junior High and Northern High Schools. Very active in school activities, she was a member of several school clubs, an office staff worker, a J.V. and Varsity cheerleader, a Governor’s School Nominee and was voted Senior Superlative – most talented for her dance talents and work in school musical plays as performer and choreographer.
While a teenager in high school, Sherry was selected as Durham’s Junior Miss and placed second in the North Carolina Junior Miss pageant, while competing with over 75 contestants. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and developed a strong sense of civic duty at an early age.
After high school graduation in 1972, she married her high school sweetheart, John D. Moore, son of Ervin Duke Moore and Angela Green Moore on June 16, 1973 at McMannen Methodist Church in Durham. She then held bank teller and secretarial positions for their first few years of marriage so that John could continue through college. After John graduated with a pharmacy degree and became a licensed pharmacist in1977, the couple moved to Rocky Mount, N.C. where he worked for Kerr Drugs.
After three years they moved back to Durham and started a family with the birth of their first son, John Jr. in 1980. Sherry then decided to become a full time homemaker and devoted mother to her son. The family moved six years later to Lakeland, FL and in 1988, had their second son, William Duke Moore, name after their two grandfathers’ middle names. Also, that year, John accepted a position with Walgreens Pharmacy in Auburndale, about a half hour drive from their home in Lakeland. John transferred with the company to Cocoa and the family purchased a home in nearby Rockledge, FL in 1991.
Soon after, Sherry decided to put her caring ability into a career and graduated as Valedictorian from Brevard Community College of Nursing. She worked at Wuesthoff Hospital in direct cardiac care for over a decade. For health reasons, she had to retire from active duty and taught nursing courses for the Red Cross for three years, after which, she retired from nursing, not to return.
She had always been of strong Christian faith and was an active member of the church wherever she went. In Rockledge, she enjoyed friends and fellowship at Grace Fellowship Church. Her many friends have been a great support to her family near and at her time of passing.
Sherry’s health problems had begun in her 20’s when she was diagnosed with a chronic cancer of genetic origin. She inherited it from her father, Jimmy, who succumbed to the disease at the early age of 51, after battling it for years. A slowly progressing condition, she endured many surgical procedures, radiation and painful times in her struggle. In 2013, Sherry decided to go back to her early roots of dance and take a tap-dancing class for exercise. While shopping for tap shoes in a small dance equipment store, Sherry suffered a fall which results in a severe elbow break, adding to her suffering by requiring five surgeries. Through all the burden of her own body, Sherry remained a wonderful wife, caring and very proud mother, a friend to depend on, a teacher at church, a charity supporter and a patriotic citizen.
She will be missed by a lot of people and although she was saddened by many of the current world’s horrific events in the last of her years, her faith in God never wavered and the strength of her convictions never faltered.
Sherry York Moore made her mark in this world and many beneficiaries of her kindness exist today. Enjoy heaven, angel Sherry and rest in peace.

Hebrews 4:14-16 (NASB)
Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.
For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin.
Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
John 15:13 " Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends."
