John was a member of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades, and retired from the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. He was employed at the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral since the late 1960’s. He was proud of his work on the Apollo and Space Shuttle programs as an industrial painter and later as a rigger, and was known to rappel off the side of the NASA Vehicle Assembly Building while performing his duties. John enjoyed hunting, boating and NASCAR.
John was a devoted family man and loving father. He is survived by his wife of fifty-eight years, Frances Ann Shields; a daughter, Tina Denise Shields, of Aberdeen, New Jersey; and a son, John Edward Shields, Jr., of Rockledge, Florida; two sisters, Patricia Ann Hudgins and Peggy Joyce Ramage of Kosciusko, Mississippi; along with four grandchildren, Drew Ellison Shiner, Eve Arielle Schroeder, Garrett Reed Shields, and Clay Austin Shields.
A Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 21, 2019 from 2:00 to 3:00 pm at the Life Event Center at Florida Memorial, 5950 South US Highway 1, Rockledge, Florida. A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 pm.
