"Jack" as he was affectionately known by family and friends is lovingly remembered by his wife of 66 years: Rita Ann Hoog McCabe; his two children: Michelle Ann (David) McCabe Sims and John Robert (Lora) McCabe II; his grandchildren: Ryan (Susan) Sims, Joshua (Jordan) Sims, Marissa McCabe, Nicole Kraai, and Joshua Kindred; his sisters: Kathleen Taylor and Patricia Gercken (deceased); six great-grandchildren; twelve nephews and eight nieces.
Jack was born in St. Louis, Missouri to the late Estelle McCabe Toennies and John J. McCabe. He enlisted in the Air Force and was very proud to serve his country. Jack and Rita married and moved to Florida in 1957 where he pursued a career at the Kennedy Space Center for 43 years. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Rollins College.
Jack excelled in many sports, but was extremely proud of winning the "Most Valuable Player" award in a ball tournament while serving in the Air Force. Jack was fondly remembered as a coach for his children's softball, baseball, and soccer teams. Collecting Lionel trains was his passion. Every Christmas he would set-up his large train display for all to see. Jack was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church where he was an usher.
A mass is scheduled at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Saturday, January 28, 2023 at 11:00 am. A visitation for John will be held Saturday, January 28, 2023 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Life Event Center at Florida Memorial, 5950 South US Highway 1, Rockledge, Florida, followed by a memorial service with military honors at 2:00 PM. The family invites all of Jack's friends and loved ones to join them in celebrating his life.
