George A. Porter passed away at Health First Holmes Regional Hospital, March 25, 2012. George was born to George A. Porter, Sr. and Emma Belle (Mann) Porter on January 9, 1921, at Gerlaw, IL. He graduated from Alexis High School in 1939 then went to work at the Rock Island Arsenal, Rock Island, IL. He went into service in the U.S. Air Force from 1943-1945. He married Phyllis Wiggins of West Liberty, Iowa on March 11, 1944, while stationed at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base.
When he returned from WWII, he spent his civilian career of 45 years as a business owner, and manager of sales. He loved family, friends, and music. Prior to moving to Melbourne, he was a long term member of his church choir, served as President of this local Lions Club, Commander of the local Legion, and member of the local Kiwanis. He also enjoyed showing his prize-winning horses with his son. He also was an organ donor. He and his wife moved to Melbourne in 2002.
Survivors are his wife, Phyllis W. Porter; daughter, Jane McCoy of Melbourne; son, Philip G. (Linda) Porter of Roswell, GA; grandsons, Don and Dan Voelcker of Melbourne Beach; Alex Porter of Roswell, GA; Josh (Sarah) Porter of Tallahassee; and great-grandchildren, Kendall and Joshua Porter of Tallahassee.
A memorial tribute to him will be held at the home of his daughter, Friday, March 30, 2012 from 5:00-7:00pm. Donations in his memory may be sent to the Salvation Army Melbourne Corp, 1080 South Hickory, Melbourne, FL 32901.
