He was a graduate of Chattanooga High School, Class of 1941, and held a BS degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. He also held a degree from the USAF Air University, Air Command and Staff College.
On Dec 24, 1947, he was united in marriage to Garnette Marie (Biji) Borum, and the couple had two children.
Colonel Reed served in the US Air Force, 409th Bomber Group, 643rd Squadron in World War II, flying 65 combat missions in the A-20 attack bomber. He also flew over 100 combat missions in Vietnam as transport pilot and Wing Commander. As Command Pilot he logged over 10,000 hours flying time in 26 different types of aircraft, including the C-5 and the C-141. His military awards include the Legion of Merit with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, the Distinguished Flying Cross with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, the Meritorious Service Medal and the Air Medal with 16 Oak Leaf Clusters.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Biji; a son, Charles Borum Reed of Austin, TX; his parents, Dr. and Mrs. William Anderson Reed; and a brother, William Anderson Reed, of Griffin, GA.
He is survived by a son, Michael Anderson Reed and wife, Rebecca R. Reed, of Cocoa Beach, FL, granddaughter, Karen M. Reed, and great-granddaughter, Torrie A. Dortly, and grandson, Austin M. Reed, his wife Nicole L. Reed, and great-grandchildren Bella B. Kirkland, and Hudson C. Reed.
Also surviving are his widowed daughter-in-law, Kathryn N. Reed, of Tucson, AZ, three granddaughters, Kelly K. Reed, Lindsey A. Reed, and Crystal D. Ellefsen, her husband Kenneth, and great-grandchildren Grey and Jane. Also surviving are sisters, Mabel Stenstrom, of El Cajon, CA, and Betty Woodard, of Chattanooga, TN, and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, February 17, 2018 at 10:00 am the Life Event Center of Florida Memorial, 5950 South U.S. Hwy. 1, Rockledge, FL, with the Reverend Robert Early officiating. Visitation will be held one hour before the service. Private Internment of his ashes will follow immediately after the service.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the charities of their choice.
