Paul E. Plasters, 82, of Rockford, IL was promoted to Glory on August 3, 2020 at 10:45 a.m. He passed away from a valiant fight of pancreatic cancer. Born on January 31, 1938 in Mount Vernon, IL, to Newell and Opal (Brown) Plasters. Married Marsha Meinert on August 17, 1979 in Pecatonica, IL. Paul worked at Sundstrand for 39 years, holding various jobs through the years. He retired as an electrician in 1999. Paul enjoyed many outside activities. His real joy was feeding the less fortunate on the streets of Rockford with Marsha for many years. Paul had a love of gardening, his ponds, building a gazebo to sit in and enjoy for many hours. He was always redoing their home to make it just the way Marsha and he wanted it. Paul enjoyed taking trips on the Harley all over the United States. Occasionally, the grandchildren would go along in the sidecar. He had just received a certificate for logging one million miles on the bike. Paul rode enduros for many years as well. Other things that Paul enjoyed were: retiring from the Coast Guard Auxiliary after 19 years, holding the position of Commander twice. He was a member of the Salvation Army, where he was the head usher at Church, and the Salvation Army Disaster Team where he enjoyed going on mission trips to Honduras, and going to many various disasters around the United States. He loved being on committees to help better serve the Lord, such as the Red Kettle Campaign during the Christmas season. Paul was a Ham Operator for over 60 years with the calls of WA9FFL and K9PEP. He enjoyed supporting his grandchildren, nieces and nephews during their sporting events. Paul like traveling with Marsha for her bowling tournaments as well. His love and compassion for others showed in his walk of life.
Paul is loved and missed by his wife, Marsha “Lovie” of Rockford; daughter, Kandy (Douglas) Jones of Machesney Park; sisters, De Etta (William) Barton of Machesney Park, Carla Ballew of Rockford, Jill Patton of Molalla, OR; brother, Jack (Susan) Plasters of Rockford; sister and brother-in-law, Susan (Gerry) Siemens of Pecatonica, brother and sister-in-law, Robert (Teresa) Meinert of Winnebago, and brother and sister-in-law, Richard (Liz) Meinert of Mesa, AZ; grandchildren, Tanner (Jenny), Kyle (Veronica), Cody (Mandy) Jones, and Zachary Plasters; great-grandchildren, Luke, Toby, Evan, Kayla, and Jonathon Paul. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and other family around the world. He will also be missed by his coffee buddy and friend of 60 years, Jack O’Hara. He was preceded in death by his parents, sons Allen and Timothy Plasters, sister Carol Henderson, and mother and father-in-law, Donald and Beverly Meinert.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 15, 2020 at The Salvation Army at 500 S. Rockford Ave, Rockford, IL 61104, with Lt. Col. Dan and Becky Sjogren and Major Mark Martsoff officiating. A visitation will be held from 9:45 a.m., until the time of service. Memorials may be made to the family. Masks and social distancing rule will apply.
