George A. Smith

Barbara passed away February 15, 2017 at OSF Hospital, George passed away February 27, 2017 at Provena Cor Mariae.

Barbara was born June 30, 1932 in Joliet, IL. to Wilbur and Barbara (Hook) Sanders. In 1950 she married George Smith and together shared 66 years of marriage while raising their two children. Barbara worked at Greenlee Manufacturing , Square D. Electric and Adams Letter Service, where she retired. The most important roles in her life were wife, mother and grandmother and she was the hallmark of all three. Barbara always had a smile on her face , a kind word to share and love in her heart.

George A. Smith was born in Loves Park, IL. on December 13, 1928, to Archie and Cecile (Mederis) Smith. He worked for Greenlee, Rockford Hardware and Sundstrand for 30 years until retirement. George enjoyed harvesting his bountiful vegetable garden an area of the neighborhood that became a social gathering for friends. He took pride in the landscape that surrounded his home with beautiful flowers. Together George and Barbara were the most content when their home was filled with family and friends and their pool was splashing with fun from the grandkids and their friends.

Both are survived by son, Kurt (Dana) Smith; grandchildren, Kyle and Cassidy Smith; son-in-law, Jerry Silver.

Barbara is survived by brother, John (Phyllis) Sanders; sister, Ruth (Bob) Owens; special cousin, Wayne Johnson; nieces and nephews. Predeceased by parents; daughter, Penny Silver; brother, Richard Sanders.

George is survived by brother, Tye (Dianne) Smith; sister-in-law, Jeanette Smith. Predeceased by parents; brother, Fred Smith; sisters, Laura and Pearl.

Graveside Services at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 4, at Willwood Burial Park, 7000 W. State St. Rockford, IL. followed by a luncheon at George and Barbara’s home. Condolences to www.advantagefunerals.com
