Frederick M. “Fred” Barkhurst, 84, of Center Township, peacefully went home to be with the Lord in his own home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born February 22, 1927 in Weirton, WV, son of the late Frederick J. and Ruth Barkhurst. Fred proudly served his country with the U.S. Navy during WWII. Fred was a member of the Monacatootha American Legion Post #580, Monaca. Following his honorable discharge, he returned home and began working at Koppers. Fred later became a millwright at Crucible Steel and also worked with Barkhurst Construction.
Fred loved the outdoors; he enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was also an avid bowler; and a member of the Monaca Turners where participated in the bowling league. At the Barkhurst Family Reunions, Fred could be found at the picnic shelter, up on the hill, playing cards with the rest of the Barkhurst men. He was a member of Mt. Carmel U.P. Church, Aliquippa.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 60 years: Audrey J. (Smith) Barkhurst in 2008.
Fred is survived by his daughter and son-in-law: Cynthia (Edward) Drake, Raccoon Township; two granddaughters: Tara Hartle and her husband Alan, Freedom; Haeley Drake and her fiancé Timothy Wesley, Monaca; four great grandchildren: Connor, Payton, Paxton and Kaleb; one brother: Richard Barkhurst of Evansville, IN; and his Richard’s children: Venetia, Ricki, Marsha Lynn, Eric and Renee; also his dear friend: Patricia “Pat” Keck.
Friends will be received Tuesday, June 21, 2011 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the SAUL-GABAUER FUNERAL HOME, INC., 273 Route 68, Rochester (adjacent to Sylvania Hills Memorial Park Mausoleum).
