Dr. Richard “Dick” McNutt, 83, a life-long resident of New Brighton, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, surrounded by his loving family, Wednesday, October 27, 2010. Dr. McNutt was born in New Brighton on September 1, 1927, the son of the late Obie Clifton and Ida Marie (Carroll) McNutt. After graduating from New Brighton High School and attending Geneva College, he graduated from the Palmer College of Chiropractic, Davenport Iowa. Dr. McNutt served Beaver County residents in his New Brighton office for 29 years before retiring in 1984. He then established the family floral business in New Brighton: McNutt’s Abbey Flower Shoppe, Inc.
Dr. McNutt proudly served his country with the U.S. Navy aboard the hospital ship: U.S.S. Benevolence in the Asiatic Pacific and China Theatres. He was also present at the experimental dropping of the Atom Bomb at Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands in 1946.
He was a member of American Legion Post 19 and Masonic Lodge #259, both of New Brighton. Dr. McNutt was a former member of The First United Methodist Church for 55 years where he served as a Sunday School Teacher and Treasurer. He was a member of The First Church of God, New Brighton, where he served as an Elder and Sunday School Teacher. He served on the New Brighton School Board for 18 years, six of those as President; also Past President of the Beaver County Florists Association. His Professional memberships were with the American, Pennsylvania and Beaver County Chiropractic Associations. He, and his son Mike, were founders of the New Brighton Christmas Open House, an event that was held for many years. Dr. McNutt was an avid Steelers, Pirates and Penguins fan.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-mother: Harriet McNutt; and three brothers: Dr. William McNutt, Donald McNutt and James McNutt.
He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years: Charleine (Paton) McNutt; two sons and a daughter-in-law: Richard McNutt, Chippewa; Mike and Sue McNutt, New Brighton; six grandchildren: Jeramy (Joni), Waylon (Malissa), Shane (Amy), Chase, Hannah and Tyler; two great grandchildren: Aaron and Bryce; his sister: Judi Flynn, Beaver; and several nephews and nieces.
Friends will be received today, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. in the SAUL-GABAUER FUNERAL HOME, INC., 273 Route 68, Rochester (adjacent to Sylvania Hills Memorial Park Mausoleum). His funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, in the funeral home with Pastor Douglas Show, New Brighton First Church of God, officiating.
