Liz was born on April 29, 1948 in Rochester, N.Y. where she grew up with her beloved four brothers. She lived in Rochester all throughout her childhood, and loved to share memories of growing up on Lakeview Park with her family and playing with her childhood best friend, Barb.
After graduating from Nazareth Academy, Liz went on to college to receive a Bachelor's degree in Secondary Education & Spanish from Rosary Hill College (now Daemen College) and then a Master’s degree in Literacy from Nazareth College. While in college, Liz studied abroad in Spain, where she fell in love with the language and the Spanish culture. She then moved to Albany where she got a teaching job, teaching Spanish at Bishop Maginn High School. A few years later, Liz moved back to her hometown Rochester where she raised her two children, T.D. and Meaghan in Gates, NY.
Liz then went on to teach junior high Spanish for a total of 38 years. In Rochester, she began teaching at St. Helen’s School then went on to teach most of her years at All Saints Academy where she not only taught Spanish, but she also directed all the junior high musicals. She ended her last years before retiring, teaching at Nazareth Academy - right where it all started. Liz truly loved working with junior high students and always used to say, “they kept her young”. Liz taught hundreds of students through the years who have shared fond memories of being in her Spanish class or participating in each year’s musical production. Liz never truly knew how many lives she had influenced.
Liz’s true love though, was her family. Liz hosted big family dinners for most of the major holidays and was always planning the next family get together. Liz was an incredible cook and her recipes will never taste the same. Liz was always thinking of her family, and whose birthday or special celebration was coming up next. Liz’s first loves of her life were her four brothers, Tom, Mike, Pat and Tim. Liz loved laughing at memories from their childhood and truly cherished watching their families grow and experience milestones. Liz had an incredible positive outlook on life - that drew people to her. Liz’s empathy, compassion, and charismatic personality were contagious. In her spare time, Liz loved to cheer on the Buffalo Bills, and spend time with her beloved “neighborhood family”, The Leones. To say that she will be missed, would be an understatement.
She is survived by her son, Terrance “T.D” Thaney Jr., her daughter, Meaghan (Shaun) McSweeney, and her two grandchildren Mitchell and Maeve McSweeney. She also is survived by her brothers Patrick (Kathy) Mannion and Timothy (Kathy) Mannion; as well as her loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She is predeceased by her parents, Brian and Jean Mannion; and her brothers Thomas Healy and Michael Mannion.
Calling hours for Liz will be held on Friday, April 18, 2025 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Alvah Halloran & Son Funeral Home, 2125 Chili Ave, Rochester, New York 14624.
