It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mary Bacon, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Mary peacefully departed on October 23, 2023, of 90, leaving a legacy of love and kindness that will forever grace our hearts.
Mary was born on March 17, 1933, to Allen and Florence Bergstresser in Yatesville, New York. She graduated from Cortland College in New York in 1953 with her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. She married the love of her life, John Dewey Bacon of Rochester, NY on April 17, 1954.
She taught school and then started a family in 1955. In October of 1964, with three children in tow, John and Mary moved to Wellsville, NY to become owners and operators of Long Vue Motel & Restaurant. Mary’s arthritis got the best of her, and they moved the family to Tucson, AZ. She then went back to school at the University of Arizona to renew her teaching certification and then continued to fulfill her dream of becoming a special education teacher. Mary obtained a Master’s in Special Education and began teaching; however, she kept going to school and obtained another Masters in Reading. She was a resource teacher and taught autistic students for several years. She was an amazing teacher touching and changing many children’s lives.
Mary was predeceased by her husband John Dewey Bacon, sister Pauline Domm and brothers: Skippy, Donnie, William, and Bob Bergstresser. Mary is survived by her loving children Roger Dewey Bacon, James David (Deborah) Bacon of (CA)., and Carolyn Jane (Paul) Burger of Tucson. Grandchildren are Sarah Bacon (CA), Jack (Capt. Rosa-Mae) Bacon (VA), SMSgt. Paul Burger Jr. (Jenna) of Robins Air Force Base, GA, and Crystal Burger of Tucson. Greatgrandchildren are Amy (Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, AZ), Wyatt Burger (GA), Parker and Addison Bacon (VA), and sibling James Bergstresser (NY). She leaves behind many wonderful nieces, nephews, cousins, a wide circle of friends, and extended family who will forever carry her memory in their hearts. The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude for the wonderful care Mary received at Sunrise Senior Living. She adored every moment spent with her family and friends and exemplifying the value of family and togetherness. Although we mourn her passing, we also celebrate the beautiful life she lived and the lasting impact she had on all of us.
A graveside service will be held at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Rochester, NY on Saturday, June 8, 2024 at 11am.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to The Autism Society Southern Arizona or The National Fabry Disease Foundation, two causes near and dear to Mary's heart.
