Walter James Woods Jr., 89, formerly of Rochester Hills, MI, passed away on January 18, 2023. He was born in Lincoln Park, MI on December 7, 1933. Walter graduated as valedictorian from Lincoln Park High School class of 1951. He attended University of Michigan on a math scholarship. He was married to June Langdon on September 5th, 1959 until she passed in 2018. Walter was an engineer with ANR Pipeline Co. retiring in 1987. He then started Woods Consulting Service. A highlight of his career was designing and working on the HIOS offshore gas platform in the Gulf of Mexico. Walter was instrumental in bringing natural gas to Pierre, South Dakota as co-owner and developer of SDIP (South Dakota Intrastate Pipeline Co.) He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Rochester, a lifetime member of The Rochester Eagles #2634,and belonged to the CGA (Clown Golf Assoc.). Walter was one of the founding members of the Old Timer’s Luncheon Group of fellow retirees. Walter had a passion for reading, music, golfing, bridge and Sudoko.
He is survived by his children, Terry (Ron) Wright, Catherine (Ralph) Brinker, and Gordon (Dawn) Woods. Grandchildren, Gordon Sheppard, Kenneth Brinker, Kaytlin (Arman) Sirounian, Roan (Sarah) Brinker, and Nicholas Woods. Great-grandchildren, Chandler Ray, Gabrielle Ray, Nicole Sirounian, Luca Sirounian, and Olivia Brinker. Brother, Thomas Woods.
In addition to his loving wife June, Walter was preceded in death by son-in-law Gordon P. Sheppard and granddaughter Amber R. Sheppard-Ray.
Walter is also survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins and many wonderful friends and co-workers.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Alzheimer’s Association, Residential Hospice, or United Hospice of Marlette.
