Thomas, known to the family as Jerome, and many others as Coach Evans or Tommy, left an indelible impression on those who knew him. He filled the world with laughter, quick wit, and love, while dedicated to his family, and the pursuit of excellence, never without jokes.
Born on January 13, 1964, Thomas Jerome Evans was born into a loving family in Mt. Olive, NC, to Minnie Grey Bass Evans and Charlie Evans, who preceded him in death. At a young age, he moved to Pontiac, Michigan, and was raised by his Aunt Odell and Uncle Mance Thomas, who preceded him in death. He is survived by his beloved wife, Elaine M. Evans; his daughter, Brittany Nicole Evans; two cherished granddaughters, Autumn and Sophia; and his furry companions, Bentley, a loyal Yorkie, and Gram, a loving cat. Siblings David (Jennifer) Evans of New York City, NY; Douglas Bass (Michelle) of Camp Springs, MD; Charles Evans of St. Petersburg, FL, Ella Evans of Capitol Heights, MD, Danny Evans White (Lee) of St. Petersburg, FL, Theresa (Jeffrey) West of Goldsboro, NC, Beverly Evans of Fort Washington Maryland, Kathy Evans Lloyd of Washington, DC; Shonda Evans of Baltimore, MD; Siblings Kenneth Evans and Lillian Carol Bass Jones preceded him in death. Sister-in-law, Tami Johns of Raliegh, NC, and brother-in-law, William (Terri) Johns of Newnan, GA. He also leaves a host of nephews, nieces, and many extended family members to cherish his memory.
Thomas grew up with a passion for football that would shape his entire life. He had a remarkable 40-year career as a Clarkston Community Schools employee and football coach at Clarkston Schools. Thomas's coaching mindset was on and off the field; his prowess, commitment to the team, and camaraderie led to great achievements, including three state championships that testify to his exceptional leadership. His impact extended beyond the field, as he instilled in his players the skills necessary for success, values of integrity, teamwork, and perseverance that would guide them throughout their lives.
Thomas had an infectious love for life. He found joy in simple pleasures and cherished every moment spent with his family. A loving husband of 41 years, he shared a deep bond and friendship with his wife, Elaine M. Evans. The love they shared served as the foundation for their beautiful family. He was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Elaine, and their marriage was a testament to their unwavering commitment to one another. Thomas was a pillar of strength and wisdom for his daughter, Brittany, who was a constant source of pride and joy in his life. The strength of Jerome and Elaine’s partnership provided a solid foundation for their family, creating a nurturing environment in which their daughter Brittany flourished. Thomas took immense pride in watching his daughter grow, having nurtured her with strength, courage, and logic - Thomas instilled the invaluable lesson of never taking life too seriously, reminding her to find joy in every moment. He was a doting grandfather and his love extended to his two granddaughters, Autumn and Sophia, whom he adored, cherished, and showered with sugary treats and hugs. His love for them had no bounds, and he relished every opportunity to show them affection, wisdom, and support saying “you got this champ”! Thomas's love also extended to his two furry boys, Bentley, a loyal Yorkie, and Gram, a cherished cat. They are not just pets - they are beloved members of the family who spent much-needed quiet time with him when the girls were away.
In his leisure, Thomas valued spending time with family and friends. Whether on the road visiting his siblings, exploring tropical places, immersing himself in different cultures, or relaxing in his backyard at home, he had a cigar in-hand to savor the moment. Yet, the simplicity of being surrounded by his loved ones brought him the greatest happiness. Thomas cherished and held a special place in his heart for his humidor brothers, with whom he shared countless memorable moments, where they would engage in lively conversations, discussing everything from life's triumphs to its trials. These gatherings were a testament to the deep connection and camaraderie they shared, and the memories forged during those times will forever be treasured.
Thomas's kindness and warmth knew no bounds. He was genuinely compassionate, always ready to lend a helping hand or offer a listening ear. His genuine care for others made him an exceptional friend and mentor, and he touched the lives of countless individuals. Thomas's presence will be deeply missed, but memories of his love and friendship will forever remain in our hearts.
