Dear Marty and family,  It is with a sad heart that I send you this message, but we believe Dick is in a much better place.  He was such a kind and caring man, I will never forget his kind words and memories he shared when he brought my moms ashes to the cemetary, he had such sweet thoughts of Merrill. Dear Marty, we have been out of town and just got home where Cathy had left a message about Dick’s passing.  I am so very sorry for your loss and will keep you and your family in my prayers. I have a lot of fond memories of him during our high school years. He was a wonderful person - always kind and full of fun.

I worked with Dick at Pixley's when I was a teenager in high school. He was always there to offer a kind word or a dirty joke. He was one of the first people to make me look forward to coming to work, as you could tell the immense joy and pride he took in his.  He was one of my first mentors, and it wasn't until much later as an adult that I realized the positive impact he made in my life. He will be missed, but forever hold a special place in my heart.

I am sending my deepest sympathy to the Schlecht family--particularly his wife and daughters along with his mother Ruth and sisters Beth and Sue.   My personal memories are from the years Dick and his family lived in Royal Oak as our neighbors.  Dick was always outgoing and would keep my mother informed about the latest things going on in the neighborhood.  My friend Liz and I were babysitters for he and his sisters in those last years that they needed babysitters.       With time and distance contact was lost, however I have many fond memories. Dick was best friends with my older brother, Neil (or Dr. W. Neil as I like to call him).  After I moved away from Rochester, Dick never hesitated to call me and remind me what I needed to do to be a better younger brother.  I know that Neil will miss Dick dearly - and so will I.

I worked with Dick for a short time at Pixley’s around 1993, doing pre-need for them. Dick was the epitome of a small town funeral director, he knew everyone in Rochester and had an incredible memory. One afternoon, he had picked up his two adorable little girls from day care and brought them Back to the funeral home. Dick got called to wait on a client and I said I would keep an eye on the girls while he was busy, although they didn’t know me very well. I was doing something on the computer and one of the girls climbed up on my lap. She got the giggles! She laughed about everything I said or the computer did. I never forgot that giggle! 
Rest In Peace, Dick. You are a fine man. And I hope the girls still giggle a lot.

I first met Dick when I was a brand new apprentice at Pixley right out of mortuary school.  To say he accepted me with open arms would be an understatement.  After my apprenticeship was completed, I was hired on as a licensed director working alongside him.  I worked exceptionally hard to earn his respect over time - this took a lot of grit, patience, perseverance and tears,  but he made me better and he made me stronger.  We grew to love and respect each other, not only as colleagues, but as true friends that felt like family and Marty will forever be my favorite nurse!  When I left the funeral home, I was gifted a photo of downtown Rochester with well-wishes written on the back and I have and will forever cherish these sentiments.  To have this message written by Dick in his hand writing is a real treasure.

I am grateful for and will carry the memories of Dick in my heart forever.  I am better for knowing and loving him.

The loss of Dick Schlecht, a genuine, caring individual, with an enormous personality is deeply felt. Family and friends, colleagues and community will mourn his absence. The ones above, will rejoice in their reunion with him. I only wish I could be a "fly on the wall" for that mix of merriment and mischief! I carry many fond memories  of my tenure at Pixley.  Dick was a fixture in my life growing up and later he became a great friend during the years I worked with him at the Funeral Home.  My years working with Dick and Johnnie and the rest of my family at PFH are some of my fondest memories. Lori and I loved spending time with him and we would all just laugh and laugh. Our thoughts, and those of all the Yerex kids, are with you all.

Dick went to school with my mom and dad, and he was a good family friend. He was a great source of comfort and compassion to me whenever we would have to deal with someone's death. I'll always be grateful for his kindness and sense of humor. May he rest in peace.

I called him Ricardo.  He called me Carlos. When that started I can’t remember as we have been such close friends for nearly 60 years.  What I do remember is his humor, empathy and an incredible memory of events.  So many of our frequent phone calls started “Carlos, I was just thinking about you, do you know it was 14 years ago that….”  Our calls  always ended with “I love you guy.

  I love you Ricardo and will miss you terribly.   Marty, our thought and prayers are with you and the girls

What a shock to learn of Dick's passing!  He was a great friend to both Neil and me for more than 58 years.  Thankfully we have so many wonderful memories of happy times spent together.

Marty and girls, This is such sad news.  I knew Dick from St. John. He was a caring person with a great personality! I remember times when he had everyone around him laughing.  I will always remember Dick's kindness to my family during the last weeks of my father's life and that he "held our hands" with the funeral preparations.
