Patrick Bailey

On Saturday, February 25, 2017, Patrick Bailey left this world peacefully at the Detroit VA Hospital. Born on March 19, 1948 in Pontiac, MI, Patrick spent his time and energy enriching the lives of others with a natural ease only he possessed. He was a man who wore many hats (both figuratively and literally), but always carried the same infectious smile nested between his whiskers.

Patrick was a loving and devoted father to his daughter Katherine and his son Jordan. Patrick would have done anything for his children. He was a man who attended their musical performances, dance recitals, swim meets and any other event without fail. Even after Kate and Jordan left Michigan to pursue new adventures, Patrick drove tens of thousands of miles from east coast to west coast just to be with them and build new memories. Patrick's memory will forever live on in the hearts of his children. One would be remiss to not mention his dedication to his family.

Patrick inherited his love of art from his father and became a graphic artist and draftsman, enjoying a career at Masco, working with GM for many years. He served his country in the Coast Guard, stationed in New London, Connecticut during his four-year term. This is where he earned his nickname “Seasick Bailey”, which he retained the rest of his life.

One of his favorite hobbies was golf, playing on the same league for over 20 years, ever searching for the first place title. And, oh, the rock walls! The man could build a rock wall, his favorite creative outlet…fueled by his Irish roots. His patience and talent with wood was also remarkable, and he built many beautiful gazebos and arbors that stand as a testament to his tenacity. Patrick loved to travel…by car. He took his young family on many trips across the country…at a leisurely rate…enjoying all the quirky spots along the way.

Patrick was the son of Wallace Bailey and Susie Gilmer, who predeceased him. He has two brothers, Edward Bailey of Leonard, MI and his twin brother, Michael Bailey of Lake Orion, MI. He leaves behind two children, Katherine Bailey of New York City, NY and Jordan Bailey of Medford, OR.

Anyone who knew Patrick Bailey, either for a moment or their entire lives, could tell you what a loving, unique and mischievous man he had been. His innocence and honesty was a window into his gentle soul, a trait that he passed on to his children, and all of us who knew him.

“Being where he loved, doing what he loved to do.”

There will be a Celebration of Life for Patrick on July 8th at the home of Edward Bailey.
