Liem was born the son of Ung Van Tran and Hoa Thi (Vu) Tran in Saigon, Vietnam on August 3, 1957. Arriving as a refugee to the United States in 1975, Liem later earned a bachelor’s degree from Walsh College. Liem married Dzung Thanh Bui on November 28, 1981 at Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church in Orchard Lake, Michigan. Liem and Dzung raised their family in Waterford and later moved them to Rochester Hills in 1997. Liem retired from the US Postal Service where he worked for over 30 years. He enjoyed volunteering for many different causes. In 2014 he had the honor of meeting Pope Francis in Rome while serving as a sponsor for his close friend’s baptism.
Liem is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Dzung Tran; children Irwin (Regina) Tran, Theresa (Dennis) Kouo, Tracy Tran, Jennifer Tran, and Christopher Tran; grandchildren Damian Tran, Lowen Tran, Henry Kouo, and Evan Kouo; siblings Ngoc Anh Do, Cuong Tran, Dung Nguyen, Quy Tran, Quang Tran, and Nga Pham.
Liem’s family invites all to a visitation on Friday August 6, 2021 from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m., with a rosary service at 6 p.m. at Pixley Funeral Home, located at 322 W. University Drive in Rochester, Michigan. Liem will lie in state on Saturday August 7, 2021 from 10:30 a.m. until the time of funeral mass at 11 a.m. at St. Mary of the Hills Catholic Church, located at 2675 John R. Road, Rochester Hills.
