The son of Kenneth and Edith (Taft) Harmon, Ken was born in Washington, D.C. on May 16, 1929. He was a graduate of Palo Alto High School and served in the U.S. Army. After earning his B.A. at San Jose State College and his Ph.D. at the University of Washington, he joined the faculty of Harvey Mudd College in 1959 and later became a Professor of Chemistry at Oakland University. In the course of a long and successful career, he taught thousands of students and published more than one hundred research papers. After retirement, he remained active in his field of research until the age of 80.
An avid fisherman, Ken spent many happy hours in the pursuit of salmon, trout, and steelhead. He also enjoyed skiing, hiking, camping, and backpacking.
Ken is survived by his wife of 39 years, Mary Jennifer; children (with Ann Brown Harmon) Laurel (Edwin Sanchez) Harmon and Benjamin (Amy) Harmon; and grandchildren Matthew, Sadie, and Daniel Sanchez.
