John Timothy Barr, age 76, of Rochester Hills, Michigan, died on Saturday April 4th, 2020 after a brief and heroic fight with COVID-19. John was born to Robert and Thelma (Theriault) Barr on January 27, 1944 in Detroit, Michigan. He graduated from Benedictine High School in 1962. John earned his bachelor’s degree from Western Michigan University, where he also graduated from the Kalamazoo Police Academy in 1968. John was appointed to the Detroit Police Department (DPD) in April of 1969, from where he retired in January 2004. In 1986, John was appointed to the Detroit Police Officers Association (DPOA) grievance board on which he served in numerous roles until 2004, his last post being Sargent at Arms. Not completely ready to retire, John started working for the Police Officers Association of Michigan (POAM) shortly after leaving the DPD. He served as business agent/analytical researcher, until his death. John was also a Trustee on the Board of Directors for the Retired Detroit Police and Firefighters Association (RDPFFA).
John had a great love for his family and was very active in the lives of his children and grandchildren. In the 1970’s and 80’s, he enjoyed coaching their numerous sports teams while also serving as the athletic director at St. Damian grade school in Westland. John was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved sister Betty Richter, his in-laws Don and Jeanne (Gigi) Werner, his brother-in-law Mark Werner and his nephews Jordan Barr Abel and Robert Richter. John is survived by his beloved wife Donna Werner; his brother Robert (Debbie) Barr; his sister and brother-in-law Wendy (Ed) Link; his children Terri Barr (Carol Purcell), JoAnn Miller (Ben), Tim Barr (Kelly), Dan Barr (Dori), Paul Barr (Joy) and Katie Sievert (Steve); step-sons Kevin Wall and Kelly Wall (Lilly); 15 grandchildren; along with multiple step-grandchildren and nieces and nephews who lovingly knew him as Uncle Tim or Sir.
