Janet was born in Pontiac, Michigan on July 27th, 1937 to Elizabeth Harriet Way and Charles Carey Maitrott. She was the youngest of 2 children, and was preceded in death by her parents and sister Harriet Bell Conley. She loved spending summers in Elk Rapids with her family.
She was a graduate of Rochester High School. She traveled to Colorado with her dear best friend, Jackie Macha, and enrolled in college at Adams State in Alamosa.
It was there, in 1957 that she met the love of her life, Donald Keith Canfield. They married on August 29th, 1959 at the Rainbow Trout Lodge in Antonito, Colorado. They were married for 62 years. They spent time residing in San Francisco, California where she worked as a telephone operator at Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company. Jan and Don also resided in Germany during his time serving in the United States Army.
They were completely devoted to each other, and every night they held hands as they fell asleep.
Janet worked as the Secretary to the Director of Special Education at Rochester Public Schools.
Janet is survived by her husband Don. Jan and Don had 2 children and she was a devoted mother and best friend to Mineka (Janssen) Thompson and Meaghan Canfield.
She was a cherished Grandma to Samantha (Ryan) Petrick, Ashley (Steven) Murphy, Jessica Aldrich, Andrew Hartfelder, Janssen and Nathan Thompson. She was a beloved Grammy to Rocco and Remy Petrick, and to Carter James “CJ” Aldrich. Janet was also anxiously awaiting the birth of her great grandson, Baby Murphy, and took great joy in the fact that his due date is on her birthday.
She will be missed by many nieces, nephews, cousins (especially her beloved Mary Gallivan) and special friends.
Janet will be missed for many reasons, but mainly for how she loved blindly and without condition and was totally devoted to her family.
Cremation has taken place. There will be a gathering at the family home at 147 N. Broadway Lake Orion, MI 48362 on Tuesday, June 8, 2021 from 3-8:00 PM. Friends and family are welcome to come and celebrate Janet’s life.
