PETERS, Herbert G., age 95, a life-long resident of Rochester, died April 24, 2011. He was born in Rochester on December 19, 1915, to the late Louis and Florence (Garrett) Peters. He graduated from Rochester High School in 1932, received his Bachelors Degree from Alma College and his Masters Degree from Wayne State University. After serving his country during World War II as a 1st Lt., he taught in the Rochester Community Schools , serving at Rochester High School and then West Middle School until his retirement in 1981 after 32 years of service. He was a man gifted with so many interests and talents who loved to share with them with people. Besides teaching he worked as a sports reporter for the Detroit newspapers, the Oakland Press and the Rochester Clarion. His family came to Rochester in the 1840’s and he was fascinated with its history, eventually leading him to become A Son of the American Revolution. He also was a member of the National Education Association and the Rochester Elks #2225. On June 6, 1946, he married Madeleine A. Vignier in France, her native land; they were able to spend over sixty-four years together. Besides his wife, he was the father of Gigi (Thomas) Williams of Shelby Twp., Jacqueline (Ross) Baker of Fairfield Glade, TN and Congressman Gary (Coleen) Peters of Bloomfield Twp. Also surviving are his eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and his sister, Mary Louise Hughes. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, April 28, 2011, at 10:00 a.m. at PIXLEY FUNERAL HOME, 322 W. University Drive in Rochester, followed by burial with Military Honors at VanHoosen Jones-Stoney Creek Cemetery.
