Betsy was born in East Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1941 to Richard and Esther Keister. The middle of three sisters, Lynn and Barbie, Betsy graduated from East Grand Rapids High School before attending and graduating from Western Michigan University with a Bachelor of Arts. She later taught humanities, literature, and history in Connecticut as well as in Grand Rapids and Vicksburg, Michigan.
Being high school sweethearts, Betsy married her husband of 54 years, Peter J. Price, at Park Congressional Church of Grand Rapids in 1969 before moving to Kalamazoo, Michigan. She enjoyed a rich tennis life in Kalamazoo, not only as a member of the West Hills Athletic Club, but throughout Kalamazoo’s expansive tennis community by opening up their home as a Host Family to collegiate athletes and their coaches in town for tournaments at nearby Kalamazoo College and Western Michigan University. She also volunteered at the yearly USTA Boys' 18 & 16 National Championships. One year, while serving as the Chair for the tournament’s Transportation Committee, she grabbed her daughter from the stands to go pick up a very special tournament VIP from the airport… Arthur Ashe!
When the family moved to the northern Detroit area, Betsy was proud to serve the Cranbrook Schools community as member of the Cranbrook-Kingswood Mothers Council, including a two-year term as co-president.
Later, Betsy and Peter developed a love of boating. Upon a visit to the Les Cheneaux Islands Antique Wooden Boat show in 2004, they were hooked and later took 1st Place for the Utility 18-20 Feet Class with their 1953 Century Resorter, aptly named “Betsy Bow” after the nickname her eldest nephew gave her when he was young. They continued their love of boating with “Betsy Bow II” on the beloved and beautiful Harsens Island at the mouth of the St. Clair River on Lake St. Clair, spending many a summer day out on the water.
Betsy is survived by her loving family, husband of 54-years, Peter, and daughter Shelley Price and her partner Thomas Hicks of Arlington, Virginia.
