Charles Gibson “Bud” Hohn passed away on Wednesday, November 25, 2020 of natural causes at the age of 95. Saint Peter, if you’re reading, here’s the scoop: Dad could drive a golf ball 200 yards, use his mouth and lips to flutter whistle like a referee, make a face like Crazy Guggenheim, and hum the love theme from Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet Overture when he was 90! Also, you can get his attention with ice cream, candy bars, cookies, and pop; not to mention all things golf, Navy, classic American cars, the two Perry’s (Como and Mason), and sports (Lions, Tigers, and Wolverines). Ask him to tell you about his life-long love and wife of 68 years, Anne Miller Squires (deceased), and you’ll get poetry. Ask him about his four children—Tim, Tom, Pete, and Amy—and you’ll know pride.
But that’s not all, Dad was a heck of a husband, father, partner, pal, golfer, bowler, card player, joker, salesman (Lyon, Rockwell, Bossert), bibliophile, music-lover, coach, Navy ensign (1943-46), hopeless romantic, and all-around nice guy. He was born on March 26, 1925 in Grand Rapids to a successful businessman, fellow golf nut, and occasional crooner, Charles Otis Hohn; and a musical, gregarious, and funny mom, Geraldine Louise Gibson—a legacy that was on display throughout his life and defined his unique character. He appreciated the little, everyday things: morning coffee, children helping with errands, milkshakes and hot fudge sundaes, playing with the dog, summer evenings on the porch, a game of catch, food off the grill, giving shoulder rides, short piano recitals before going out with Mom, and family holidays. Bud and Anne were in their element at dinner and card parties, out with friends to movies, and vacationing. That’s just the tip of the iceberg Saint Peter; open that gate, Bud Hohn had a wonderful life.
Bud is survived by his four loving children, Tim (Lynda), Tom (Diane), Pete (Lisa), Amy and 7 grandchildren, Caitlin, Sam, Brian, Nick, Danny, Bryce and Deah, who have been forever enriched by his legacy. No memorial service is planned.
