Dear Ray, Kim, Debbie and Tony,
Since our family was transplanted from the south, we spent most of my childhood holidays and celebrations with the Karpinski family. 
Carol was my mom,  Elaine’s best friend. She showed me how powerful a friendship can and SHOULD be when I was very young. They spent countless hours on the phone like teenagers, they giggled and cried. They weathered more storms than I will ever know. 
When my Grannie passed, I remember Carol coming to Cissy’s and saying”let’s cook breakfast”. She grabbed me by the arm and that’s what we did. Then together we washed dishes. For some reason, she made me feel that it was an honor to help her help my family. She was right. 
The last time I saw Carol was at my brother “Bubba’s” funeral. She had received bad news about her own health a day or two before. But she “suited up and showed up” anyways. She claimed her seat next to my mom. I watched her as she gracefully got up and grabbed my dad and step-mother and gave her seat up for them. That was the most beautiful, selfless thing I saw that day. Maybe ever. 
Carol was fun and funny. I looked forward to going to see her even as a teenager. She loved with every ounce of her being. She made every person feel like they were the most important to her.  When I was a teenager, I once called her collect from a pay phone. She not only accepted my call, but talked me down from my hormonal teenage angst. She never acted too busy for me. 
 Her laugh!  I can still hear it right now. It is impossible not to smile when you hear Carol laugh. 
I will miss that my mom’s best friend is no longer on earth, but rejoice knowing there is no pain or worry in heaven. I am grateful for Carol and Ray opening their home to our big family. I am especially grateful that Carol showed me exactly what a best friend is...unfalliable, unconditional love, without limits, restrictrictions, anger or jealousy.
