Austin was born on April 23, 1955 to Austin Donald Hogue and Marguerite Evelyn Pearl Viner
in Salinas, California. Austin loved animals and was a part of the 4H club as a child. He
participated in the Boy Scouts and loved to do anything that kept him moving. As the fifth of six
children, Austin was known and loved all around town. He and his siblings were always doing
something fun, and people loved being with them. In high school, Austin competed for his high
school diving, water polo, and football teams. He was great at roller skating and riding his
unicycle, which he was still doing at 65.
After Austin graduated from Atascadero High School in 1973, he went on to join the Navy and
then crossed over to the Army, where he was promoted from an Enlisted member to a Warrant
Officer. He went on to attend flight school and became a helicopter pilot which was a lifelong
dream. Austin loved flying, and, after he finished his service, would go to the local high school to
talk about being in the Army and flying his Apache during Desert Storm.
In 1976, Austin met Judith Rae Connolly in Bremerton, Washington. Austin and Judith had five
children, Carolyn Evelyn Gertsch, Joseph Nathaniel Hogue, Samuel Duwayne Hogue, Rachel
Marie Williams, and Paul Matthew Hogue. Austin loved his children and took every opportunity
to tell them. Austin loved cheering on his kids in all of their sport and artistic endeavors,
attending games, track meets, choir concerts and plays whenever he could. He was grateful for
the time he had to share his love of the Boy Scouting organization with his sons. Austin often
told each of his children how proud he was of them and who they had become.
In 1992, after serving in Desert Storm as an Apache Pilot, Austin left the Army and tried his
hand at many vocations, finally deciding to be a cross country CDL truck driver. This gave
Austin a lot of opportunities to visit his five children and ten grandchildren.
In 2018, Austin married Lena Larsen and started his final adventure. Austin and Lena loved to
do church service for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, travel, and visit family.
They moved to Kanosh, Utah, where they became part of a wonderful community who will miss
him dearly.
Austin was predeceased by his mother Marguerite Evelyn Pearl Viner, his father Austin Donald
