WARREN GAMALIEL GILBERT
Born March 23, 1921 to James and Alice Gilbert in Bernice, Oklahoma. He was their 7th son and their 11th child. He was named after a president – Warren Gamaliel Harding. He grew up working hard with his 12 other siblings on their family farm. His mother died when he was just a little boy and his sisters took over his care.
Warren left home at an early age and signed up for the Navy at age 17 after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He traveled far and abroad while in the Navy and participated in 13 invasions in 3 wars – WWII, Korean War, and Viet Nam. He retired from the Navy as a Senior Chief after almost 23 years of service to his country.
Upon retirement from the Navy, he used the electrician skills learned in the navy to get his contractor’s license. He started his own company and worked for many years on commercial electrical jobs as well as residential. He was well-known in his community of Vista and Oceanside CA and worked into his seventies. He still got the occasional call to help someone even in his eighties.
Warren spent his last days in Oceanside CA and is survived by his long-time companion Louise Lindberg. He is also survived by his only two daughters, Debra Henn and Rene Gilbert, both of Arizona, and his three grandchildren, Tyler Henn, Blake Henn and his wife Kim Henn, and Kelsi Horner and her husband David Horner. He leaves behind 5 great grandsons – Kaiden, Cash, Zachary, Declan and Liam.
His humor, playfulness, and generosity were the qualities that always shined through and that we will miss the most. We are blessed to have had him in our lives for so many years.
