Major Thompson, 95, passed away on Monday, March 20, 2018 at the ALTAVITA Retirement Village, Riverside, CA. He was born January 27, 1923 in Atlanta Ill. where he graduated from the community high School. He subsequently was awarded a Bachelors Degree of General Education from the University of Omaha. He met his bride in Vandalia, Illinois and they were married 62 years. He is survived by his three daughters, Jean (Steve), Jane (Lloyd) and Judy (Bill), 5 grandchildren, 9 great- grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. Stewart, or as he was known by many nicknames ( Stu, Gene, Tommy) spent 20 years of his life in the defense of our country as a member of the United States Air Force, retiring from the service April 1963. He then spent the rest of his career in Civil Service where he managed the administrative security & Intelligence programs for the Inspector General’s Office, Headquarters, Strategic Air command. He also assumed responsibility for program security for ICBM programs. These included the Minuteman, Titan II, MX, ABRES and the Titan III and Atlas space booster programs. Besides his family he loved the game of golf and he spent many hours “golfing” the "General Old Golf course" in Riverside, CA. In 2015 he suffered a stroke while driving his golf cart and was transferred from independent living to the specialty recovery unit where he received excellent care. We want to thank the nurses, aides and staff of the Memory Care Unit for their loving care. We also want to express our thanks to the wonderful people of Bridge Hospice who made his last weeks so peaceful. He was preceded in death by his lovely wife Betty in 2001.
