Rafael Rivero was a humble and honorable man. Pop, as we knew him, was born in Mexico in 1929. He would soon show what his life's mission would be–family and hard work. No job would be too hard. No sacrifice would be too great.
From his early days working on the ranches in Mexico, to his long days in the blazing Texas sun working the fields as a Bracero, to his many years as a dairy farmer in Chino, he spent his life hard at work. And he toiled each day with humility, never seeking reward. I am sure he often felt tired and worn down, but it never showed. You see, it was never about himself; it was about his wife and nine children. His unwavering sacrifice provided a great life for his family, as well as a tremendous example. We were taught the value of hard work; not for accolades and praise, but for one's family. His reward was seeing his nine children have wonderful families of their own in the United States. And on April 20, 1999, he, too, became an American citizen.
Pop was married to his precious wife, Maria, for more than 61 years. Together, they had 10 children. Mallito, their baby boy, however, while still in infancy, preceded Pop in his call home to God. Pop is survived by his beautiful wife, five sons, and four daughters. In addition, Pop was blessed with 27 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.
Pop was the strongest man we have ever known. He was also the most caring and gentle man we have ever known. Our greatest blessing was to have spent our lives with him. Pop fought the good fight. He finished the race. And though it all, he remained forever faithful.
