Norman Richard Avery, age 89, passed away at his home on Thursday, December 28, 2023. Although he was born in Los Angeles, California, Norman lived most of his life in Riverside. He played trombone in the high school band and graduated from Polytechnic High School in 1952. He then enlisted in the United States Army, specialist third class, from 1955 – 1957. Upon his return to civilian life, he worked at B & J Garage, at University and Eucalyptus, in Riverside. He would meet the love of his life, Vivian and they were married on March 28, 1959. They had four children. Norman ran the 76 gas station at B & J. He had many regular customers and they loved him so much they threw a party honoring him at the botanical gardens at UC Riverside. His career with B & J Garage was from 1957 – 1999. Once retired, Norman spent time traveling with his wife. He was very involved with his grandkids, attending their extracurricular activities. Norman missed being out with people, so he went back to work (part-time) doing maintenance from 2000 - 2010 with Del Taco. Norman loved his wife of 52 years, his family and friends, his Roush Mustang, the annual Halloween party, gardening, and taking care of his dogs and even a chicken. He loved fishing and shared his passion with his family, patiently teaching most of them how to fish.
Norman is preceded in death by his beloved wife Vivian and his parents Van and Velma Avery. He is survived by his children: Sharon Christiansen, David Avery, Julie Avery, and Sandy and Lyle Shapiro. He also leaves eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren who loved him dearly and will forever be in their hearts.
