Marilyn, an extraordinary pianist and human being, was born in San Diego, CA on March 23, 1932. Her musical talent was nurtured at an early age and led to a successful career as concert pianist, teacher, and mentor to generations of young pianists. While teaching and raising a family, Marilyn extended her education by starting college at the age of 40 and obtained her Bachelor’s in Education. Later in life she founded Village Concerts, a concert series featuring renowned musicians from across the US and Canada, with an added mission to nurture the performance careers of young musicians. Marilyn recently retired as artistic director of Village Concerts and passed the baton to Tomasz Golka, conductor of the Riverside Philharmonic.
In addition to her lifelong devotion to music, Marilyn was an avid gardener, famous for growing some of the largest zucchini you’ve ever seen, gung-ho tennis player, world traveler, and lover of animals.
Marilyn is survived by her children Cheryl, Rod, Laurie, and Kathleen, and grandchildren Andrea, Ken, Jason, Amanda, Amy, Christopher, Jeremy, Taylor, Anna, Eden, Jack, Jamie, and seven great-grandchildren, as well as her beloved sister Joan Loukianoff and her family, dear sister-in-law Margaret Morgan, and step-children and step-grandchildren. She was pre-deceased by her husbands, James Cragin and Rueben Vincent Sanguinet, as well as her son Danny. Marilyn’s family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Soo and medical staff at Riverside Community Hospital, Vitas Hospice, and her dear friends Carolyn, Janegi, Marjorie, Shirley, and Kathy for their devotion to her.
A celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date. Expressions of sympathy extended through donations to Village Concerts would be dearly appreciated. (https://www.villageconcerts.org/).
