Christmas is fast approaching.  It is going to be so very difficult getting through this without you with us.  You are missed beyond words.  I will be joining mom and dad for dinner Christmas Eve before church.  It was such a surprise to have you join us last year!  I will never forget that night! You ate more of my meal than yours and I was happy to share!! I love you Jimmy.

Message from Jim's memorial service:

Jim was just a regular guy.  He learned how to work hard from his parents and he has a wife that loves him.  He always loved her in return and his children as well. 

He was born James Richard Schueller II and he had a health condition called “Lou Gehrig's Disease”.  He never wanted medical heroics.  His hero is Jesus Christ.  Jim did better than the doctors had predicted, though.  I remember the morning well almost two years after he had been diagnosed when a few of us got the message that Jim wouldn't be joining us for breakfast as we had all planned.  He just couldn't get up. Janette went and bought a wheelchair that day.
 
You could tell by the way she looked at him, that this was a love story that most of us dream about.  Jim and Janette experienced that deep love that not many people know.  When they started dating in high school, they both felt like they were “dating up”.  Jim was more than complimentary of Janette and she was flattered that this very attractive popular guy would be interested in her.

And Jim had a great faith.  I've used him as an example when people would question life after death. I would point them to this man that has the faith of a mustard seed.  He could move big mountain-sized problems.  

Jim's purpose statement is that he “lives to serve by loving his fellow brothers and sisters that are In Christ and not In Christ…and ministering to others”.  God made a mighty man.  Before I hung up the phone after we would talk, I would tell him that I love him and he would say the same…and it never seemed odd for one grown man to tell another one that they loved each other.

He was the fortunate one that could look back at his life with absolute assurance that he did well despite any shortcomings. Jim spent a lot of time with people and didn't seclude himself at the end of his mortal days.  He knew his roles as a husband, father, son, and friend and conducted himself in a manner worthy of those positions.  This disease didn't win over Jim.  Jim won over the disease.  He lived a life that transcends mortality and he had a heart for his God that few understand.   

Jim encouraged the people around him despite the pain he was enduring.  Our last Bible study was that night.  It was awesome.  We were digging into scripture and he was relishing it.  He ran the gamut of emotions…going from laughing to excitement to weeping.  After we left, he and Janette were laughing about who they would see the next day and 4 minutes after that he was gone.  We got to see that night what God was doing in the middle of what He was doing.  We got to experience Sierra singing worship to our Lord and we got to sing along with her…and Uncle Bob the week before that and Al and his family the week before that.  That night Skylar came up and had milk in her mouth and was giving Jim a kiss.  He said “don't you” and they laughed together and she skipped upstairs giggling.  They had a good laugh together.  He explained to all of us that he had just given her a macaroni & cheese kiss with it all over their lips.  Melanie has a video of Slater hanging on to Jim's wheelchair as he raced.  He was in love with his family and he endured to the very very very end.

Jim propped us up on his weakened shoulders.  He told us the hard bitter truth to strengthen us for a better day and he provided hope.  This life was the worst that Jim would endure, but this life is the best that some will have.  

Jim may have been humble, but he realized his value.  His pain was useful because his remedy was a testimony for others.  Jim never needed to feel validated because his value came from God.  God already made him valid.  His life was worth something.   

Still…Jim and Janette's loving and caring for each other didn't come with a parade.  They were characterized by love and care.  People saw it from the outside.  Their hearts were right, and good, and pure and they showed the kind of love that only few dream about.  There weren't a lot of words and fanfare.  They concerned themselves with greater things.  Jim knew that life was much better with Janette in it.  Outsiders to their relationship saw their relationship as a true love-affair.  

I really just wanted to thank all of the family for sharing Jim with us.

Hi Babe, I miss you so much! Thank you for making the last two months so full of love and joy despite what you were going thru. You tried so hard to be everything you could to everyone, and made sure they knew that you loved them. You never complained about your circumstances. You were gentle and considerate of those taking care of you and so interested in everyone's lives. You fought the good fight and you finished well. I promise to do my best with our kids and help them remember your spirit. I'll love you forever.

My lovey guy, You have left such a huge hole in all our lives. Life will never be the same for any of us. Your beloved wife and daughter miss you to the point of despair and it breaks my heart. Please visit them in their dreams to let them know you are in a perfect body and that you haven't really left them. Blesses my heart to no end to know that you are visiting your sister that you love still, so very much. Please don't ever leave us completely. This note is covered with my tears my sweet, funny boy. daddy, I love and miss you so very much! I would do anything to just hear your voice again. even though u are in a better place, I miss you so much! I know you didn't want us kids to see you suffer, but I would do anything to see you at this point! If I didn't have a daddy like you, I don't think that I would be alive. It's so hard to put in words what you mean to me. You were one of the few people who could make me forget all my problems. You were always there for me even when others weren't. You made me realize how a real man should be. Even after 20 years i still would get excited when i knew i was going go see you, I loved being around you. When I found out you were sick I was heart broken, I thought you would always be here, my backbone everyone's rock in the family. The past 2 years with you were amazing though. We made memories for a life time and I got to tell you, that you were my favorite person. And I got to text you and tell you I loved you everyday. You told me even when you are gone I can still talk to you and you will always listen and be there for me. So I still do. Thank you for all the memories the past 20 years, like the many times you tried to teach me to play cribbage, or when i was little when i would come spend the night with you and janette. or the many stories u told which janette always would give me a look cus we were pretty sure u were fabricating the story to make it more interesting haha. My favorite is when u met and held Riah at the hospital. You just stared at her trying to hide your tears, I acted like I didn't see them, and I tried to hide mine. It means so much to me you got to meet her before you left. I can still hear you saying her name in my head and playing peekaboo ? You always put family first and I know you are watching over all of us now and I can't wait til I see ur big grin waiting for me at the gates. I love you very much?

I learned about Jim through my dear friend Cathy DeWitt. My husband has had ALS for 10 years now. I think my Steve would have embraced Jim as a friend. He seems like he was a wonderful husband, father and friend.  Please know that your family is in my thoughts and prayers. Chie Smith

I met Jim and Janette at Greg Olney's bible study.  Jim was always funny and joking. Janette and Jim were so cute together.  YOu will be missed my friend.  It was wonderful to have a family reunion of the old new lifers at Jim's memorial service.  Love to you all.

The Memorial Service for Jim is Today (2/28/13) at 2:30pm at Crossroads Church in Corona. Please join us if you can in celebrating and remembering JimBob. He was a great friend, family man and man of faith.

I went through the Pipetrades school with Jimmy, he was truly a good man. I highly respected him and he will be GREATLY missed. God Bless you my friend.
