George Melvin McNeil was born on February 23, 1939 in Shreveport, Louisiana to his parents Dock McNeil and Pearl Brown-Hubbard. George grew up being raised by his mother but later reunited with his father when he joined the United States Army Reserves being stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas. He later attended college and obtained his teaching credential. He became a teacher for the Los Angeles Unified School District and taught high school shop and mechanics classes for over 20 years. He was respected and admired by his peers and his students.
After retiring from his career as a teacher, George McNeil joined the Los Angeles Police Department on December 14, 1987. In June of 1989, he transferred to West Traffic Division and became an Accident Investigator. During his career he received numerous commendations including 30 citizen commendations, 22 Bureau commendations, and at least 6 commendations from various Captains for his outstanding work ethic and skills. He also received commendations from the Assistant Chief of Police as well as the Chief of Police. He served on the LAPD for over 28 years and between his career as a Teacher and Police Officer, he served the City of Los Angeles for over 50 years.
George McNeil’s memory will be carried on by his wife, Geraldine McNeil-Lewis; his seven children Barry McNeil, Derek McNeil, Tracey McNeil, Kim McNeil, Darnell McNeil, Michael McNeil, and Joseph McNeil; as well as his stepchildren Danette Williams, Paul Williams, Victor Williams, Linda Williams, Lawrence Rideau, Emorie Cox, Aaron Lewis, Naudia Lewis, Joel Lewis, and Nikolas Lewis in addition to his siblings James, Maderas, and Camille, his many grandchildren, friends, family, former colleagues, and fellow officers.
A funeral service for George will be held Friday, May 28, 2021 from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm at Pierce Brothers Crestlawn Mortuary, 11500 Arlington Ave, Riverside, CA 92505. Following the funeral service will be a committal service from 1:00 pm to 1:30 pm at Montecito Memorial Park, 3520 E Washington St, Colton, CA 92324.
