Age 88, resident of Riverside, went to heaven on 10/9/2016. Don was born as Martin Bentley on 2/29/1928 in Detroit, MI. He was adopted at age 2 by Lee and Esther Mooney. Don spent time growing up in Oregon, Arizona, and Arkansas. He enlisted in the Navy serving in WWII, serving on the Destroyer Mansfield. He later worked as a military special investigator. He was a licensed private pilot and parachutist. He was a police officer for DeQueen, AR, where he met and married Arthurine (Johnnye) Cox. Both were married 60 years. He later became a sheriff’s deputy in Severe County, AR. The couple moved to CA and Don hired on as a Harbor Patrolman for the Port of Los Angeles. Don later served as a deputy with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, retiring in 1980 with badge #4. After “retiring,” he worked for the Moreno Valley School District. Don attended and served the Weslyan Methodist and Christ Community Church in Moreno Valley for over 40 years.
Don is survived by his son Bill Mooney (Rhonda) of Murrieta; daughter Linda Soubirous (Michael) of Riverside; daughter-in-law Marge Mooney of WA, 8 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren. Don was preceded in death by his wife Johnnye, son Alan of WA, great-grandson Ethan Root of WA, and son-in-law Kent Hintergardt.
Visitation 10/17, from 9-11am, followed by the funeral service at 11am at Acheson & Graham Garden of Prayer - Memorial Chapel, 7944 Magnolia Avenue, Riverside, CA. (951) 688-1221. Private burial at Crestlawn Memorial Park.
