Carole Swangel Obituary
Carole Marie Swangel, aged 89, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on January 29, 2024. She was a longtime resident of HOVE Ka'u, Hawaii, and recently of Edmond, Oklahoma. Born on April 7, 1934, in Altadena, California, to the late Stanley Emerson Myton Markell and Isabel Louise (Coon) Markell, Carole was a cherished matriarch and a pillar of strength for her large family.
Known for her pioneering spirit, Carole embraced the rural life in Ka'u, Hawaii, with vigor and determination. Her various endeavors included building a family home from lava rock, cultivating a bountiful garden, and tending to farm animals. Carole's commitment to her community was evident in her roles as a volunteer firefighter, first responder, and leader in the HOVE community association. Her civic engagement extended to supervising the local elections precinct, she also volunteered with the local Girl Scout organization, and she shared her insights and experiences through her column "Carole's Comments" in the Tribune Herald Newspaper.
In addition to her community work, Carole was a creative soul who enjoyed sewing, crafts, and painting. Carole's skills included baking wedding and birthday cakes for community members. Her artistic talents were complemented by her love of the performing arts, where she not only acted but also directed in the community actors Guild. In her spare time Carole loved to travel.
Carole's life was marked by her dedication to her family, which includes her Sister Christy Lea Divird and beloved children Michael (Cora) Swangel, Judy Swangel (Donald) Richards, Robert (Dagmar) Reeves, David (Dorene) Reeves, Lani Swangel (Mundus) Lomeli, Roy (Aida) Swangel, and Marcia Swangel. She was predeceased by her husband, Donald Alvin Swangel, and Sisters Marilyn Louise Stutenroth, Janice Brewster, and stepsons, Richard Wayne Swangel and Roger Dale Swangel. Carole's legacy included her 6 Children, 3 Stepchildren, 25 Grandchildren 32 Great-Grandchildren and 1Great-Great Grandchild.
Educated at Pasadena City College, she also attended Jefferson elementary and McKinley middle school. Carole's professional life included roles as a telephone operator, restaurant assistant manager, and co/owner of a Bed and Breakfast. Her faith was an important aspect of her life, and she was a devout member of the Church of Christ.
The memorial service and viewing for Carole will be held on February 13 at 4-8pm at Acheson mortuary at 7944 Magnolia in Riverside, California, where family, friends, and those whose lives she touched will gather to honor her memory and celebrate her life's contributions. Carole's funeral will be Wednesday February 14th at 9-10am also at Acheson mortuary followed at 11am, the burial at Olivewood Memorial Park at 3300 Central Ave also in Riverside.
Carole's legacy is one of love, resilience, and unwavering commitment to the well-being of her family and community. She will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
