He attended schools in Simpson and Smith counties, graduating in1947 from Magee High School. He attended Copiah Lincoln Junior College where he played football and was elected Mr. Co-Lin. He went on to graduate from Mississippi State University in 1954, obtaining a degree in Civil Engineering and earning lifetime membership into the honorary engineering fraternity Tau Beta Pi.
Upon graduation, Mr. Magee served in the U. S. Army where he was stationed in Okinawa. Following his service, he went to work for the Mississippi Department of Transportation. His career with MDOT spanned 42 years serving in various capacities including head of the Environmental Division, assistant chief engineer-operations, assistant director-administration and personnel division manager. Following his retirement from MDOT, he worked as a consultant with the engineering firm Michael Baker Jr., Inc.
Mr. Magee was a leader in his profession and actively involved in many engineering and community endeavors. He was a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers and the Mississippi Engineering Society, where he served in many roles including president in 1989. He was honored to be named Mississippi Engineer of the Year in 1983. He served as President and board member of the Central Mississippi Diabetic Association. He was a 32nd degree Mason and was actively involved in Broadmoor Baptist Church for over 55 years.
Above all things, he was a man of faith, a loving husband and father. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Martha Hardage Magee; daughter, Beth Magee Smith and her husband Steve of Jackson and their son Harrison Magee Smith; son, Wilson K. Magee Jr. and his wife Hilary of Sherborn, Massachusetts and New York City and their children Liza and Nick Winship; sisters Joyce Allen (Ed) and Jamsie Boyles, and brother Douglas M. Magee.
He was preceded in death by his parents Whaley W. Magee and Eva Magee of Mize, MS.
Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 17, at Parkway Funeral Home in Ridgeland, MS. A service honoring his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 18, at Broadmoor Baptist Church in Madison, where a visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. A graveside service will take place at 2:30 p.m. at the Madden Cemetery in Madden, MS.
