William Welborn Johnson, 83, died July 11, 2024 at his home in Madison, MS. The son of the late Henry Victor Johnson and Christine Welborn Johnson, he was born October 19, 1940, in Columbus, MS. He graduated from S.D. Lee High School, The University of Mississippi, and The University of Mississippi School of Law. He was an Attorney in private practice, served as City Prosecuting Attorney, and served as Special Chancery Judge all while in Columbus. He moved to Jackson, MS in 1997 to work for the Attorney General’s office as Special Assistant Attorney General in the Department of Mental Health. He, also, worked many years as an adjunct law professor at the Mississippi University for Women and Copiah Lincoln Community College. He retired from law in 2007 and retired from teaching in 2020. He was an avid golfer, reader, and lover of all things water-related (fresh, salt, or chlorinated). He was active for many years at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Columbus and Chapel of the Cross in Madison. He gave back to his community by working with the United Way of Lowndes County, Easter Seal Society of Lowndes County, the Columbus Lions Club, and the Boys and Girls Club.
He is survived by his wife, Rebecca Lindsey Johnson of Madison, MS, his daughter, Candace Johnson Davis (Billy) of Memphis, TN, his brother, Ronald Victor Johnson (Karen) of Oxford, MS, his grandchildren, Tristan, Aidan, and Dean, of Memphis, TN, his nephew, Ronald Victor (Tory) Johnson, Jr. (Brooke) of Baton Rouge, LA, and his niece Susannah Johnson Harris (Taylor) of Nashville, TN. Included are also many great nieces and nephews that he loved, as well.
Visitation will be at Chapel of the Cross in Madison, MS on Monday, July 22, 2024 at 9 a.m., with the Memorial Service at 10 a.m. Burial will be on Tuesday, July 23, 2024 at Friendship Cemetery in Columbus, MS at 11 a.m. Memorials may be made to The Chapel of the Cross, 674 Mannsdale Rd., Madison, MS 39110.
