Walter M. Denny, Jr. was born on November 14, 1935, in Marks, MS, to Walter M. Denny, Sr and Evelyn Lane Cox Denny. Walter passed away July 16, 2023, at the age of 87. As a born again Christian, he passed into a much better life with Jesus Christ.
Walter moved with his family to Jackson, MS in 1941 where he attended Liberty Grove Elementary, Bailey Junior High, and Central High schools. He earned a degree in accounting at The University of Mississippi. While at Ole Miss, Walter joined the Kappa Alpha Order and served as President.
At Ole Miss, Walter was the Cadet Commander of the Air Force ROTC, and the Commander of the Army-Navy-Air Force joint exercises. He was a member of the military honorary societies, the accounting and business honorary societies, and ODK leadership society.
Walter was the managing partner for DeMiller, Denny, Word & Co, one of the largest accounting firms in Mississippi, for many years before working in the oil business. He spent the remainder of his career working as the CEO of Barksdale Management, the family office of James and Donna Barksdale.
The family attended First Presbyterian Church of Jackson, then became founding members of Pear Orchard Presbyterian Church in Ridgeland. Later in life, Walter and Peggy joined First Baptist Church of Madison.
Walter was the founder of The Hundred Club of Madison-Ridgeland which provides life insurance coverage for fire and police officers who are killed in the line of duty. He was also the founding member of Annandale Golf Club in Madison.
Walter was indebted to Mr. Robert Hutton and Fannie White for their ongoing care and support.
Walter is preceded in death by his parents and sister. He is survived by his wife, Peggy, his son Walter M. Denny, III (Jennifer); daughter Ruth Lane Denny Berry (Walter); son Michael Perry Denny (Betsy); grandchildren Walter M. Denny, IV, Jack Wright Denny, Lane Margaret Berry, Walter Edward Berry, Jr., Evelyn Rose Berry, Miles Austin Perry Denny, Payton Reat Denny.
Funeral services will be held at First Baptist Church of Madison, at 11am, on Monday, July 24, 2023, with visitation at the Church sanctuary beginning at 9:30. Walter will be laid to rest at Parkway Memorial Cemetery on Highland Colony Parkway, Ridgeland, MS, immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Hundred Club of Madison-Ridgeland, (800 Woodlands Parkway, Ste.118, Ridgeland, MS), or to First Baptist Church of Madison, MS (2100 Main Street, Madison, MS, 39110).
