Truett Spurgeon Bufkin passed away at his home on Wednesday, June 15th. He was 91. The visitation will be at Parkway Funeral Home in Ridgeland, MS on Sunday, June 19th from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. The funeral service will be at Ridgecrest Baptist Church on Monday, June 20th at 11:00 am, with visitation starting at 10:00. Burial will follow at Parkway Memorial Cemetery.
Mr. Bufkin was born in Newton County to parents Reverend Hugh Clyde Bufkin and Maggie Merle Bufkin. He graduated from high school and served in the artillery of the army during World War II, and participated in the Battle of the Bulge. After returning from World War II, he married Anna Crane and subsequently had three daughters. He then attended Mississippi State University and received his Master’s Degree in Agriculture Economics. He was an avid fan and supporter of MSU and in recognition of his lengthy service, The Extension Department awarded a scholarship in his name.
Mr. Bufkin devoted his life to working in the agriculture community as a county agent and a soybean marketing specialist for the Mississippi Extension Service. In 1962, he helped organize the Mississippi Fee and Grain Association and was the Executive Secretary until 2008. He also served on the Soybean Promotion Board as well as numerous other boards, committees, and clubs, including a Bio Diesel project.
Throughout his life, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and worked tirelessly as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, and leader at Ridgecrest Baptist Church.
During retirement, Mr. Bufkin worked for Bryan Tours and led numerous excursions throughout Europe, the U.S.A., and Canada.
In addition to his other accomplishments, Truett Bufkin was a devoted family man much loved by his children and grandchildren, whom he influenced greatly. He was preceded in death by brothers Billie and Cary Bufkin, and his survived by brother, Marion Bufkin and sister, Hilda Bufkin Lay. Other survivors include his beloved wife of sixty-seven years, Anna, of Madison, MS; children, Linda Brannan (Hines) of Atlanta, Georgia; Sherry Holland (Mark) of Brandon, MS; Sheila Polk (Tony) of Osprey, Florida; six grandchildren, Davis Brannan, Kara Brannan Stewart, Lauren Holland Williamson, Whit Holland, Stephen Polk, and Michael Polk; seven great grandchildren, Davis Brannan, IV, Lettie Brannan, Jake Stewart, Sawyer Stewart, Holland Williamson, Zoey Polk, and Quinn Polk.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Truett S. Bufkin Scholarship fund at Mississippi State University.
