Mary Evelyn Redus Stevens, age 92, beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend, died Friday, October 28, 2016 at Manhattan Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Memorial services will be held at Parkway Memorial Cemetery Tuesday, November 1, 2016 at 2:00pm, with visitation from 12:00-2:00pm. Arrangements are under the direction of Parkway Funeral Home.
Evelyn, a native of Starkville, MS, was the daughter of the late Robert Hulon Redus and Mary Evelyn Burrous Redus. A graduate of Starkville High School, she attended MSCW majoring in music. In 1944, she married N.R. Jack Stevens. Married for 67 years, they have resided in Jackson, MS since 1969. Evelyn participated in social, patriotic and musical organizations, including Children of the American Revolution, Chuck Collins and the Cadets, an MSU dance band, Rogue Social Club and the Musical Coterie.
Evelyn was a charter member of Grace Presbyterian Church, Little Rock, AR, serving as church secretary for 8 years. A member of Briarwood Presbyterian Church USA in Jackson since 1969, she served as Circle Chairman, Historian and Parliamentarian for Briarwood Presbyterian Women, who honored her with an Honorary Life Membership. In 1989, she retired as Administrative Secretary, MS Emergency Management Agency where she worked for 20 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband N.R. Jack Stevens, son Alan Stevens and brother Bob Redus. Survivors are son, N.R. Stevens, III (Donna) of Alco, AR, daughter, Elizabeth Simpson of Jackson; six grandchildren Brandy Herrington (Keith) of Fairfax, VA, Murray Evelyn Petersen of Jackson, Nicole Stevens Stone (Jason) of Little Rock, AR, Todd Stevens (Tara) of Sherwood, AR, Ky Alan Stevens of Little Rock, AR and Rachel Kilgore of Fort Smith, AR and twenty great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Briarwood Presbyterian Church, 610 Briarwood Drive, Jackson, MS 39211 or Community Animal Rescue and Adoption (CARA) 960 N. Flag Chapel Road, Jackson, MS.
