John A. Johnson

Born to parents Albert Sidney and Agnes Newsom Johnson on January 23,1945 in Kentucky. The family lived for short time in Florida before the returning to Jackson., MS where he attended Murrah High School and graduated in 1963. His class maintained their connection through 60 years of reunions and monthly lunches.

He attended Mississippi State University where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in engineering in 1968. Upon enrolling at State, he joined Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity, enjoying that relationship for the rest of his life. John served as advisor and supporter of local chapters as well as serving in the national organization.

John served two years active duty in The U S Army stationed in Vietnam and San Francisco processing personnel. He continued this commitment with extended service in The Army Reserves.

After military service he returned to State, graduating with his Master Of Business Administration in 1972. After receiving his Masters, he worked for Shell Oil in New Orleans before returning to Jackson to work in state government. He earned his Law degree from Mississippi College in 1980 and continued in state government using those skills. He retired from state government and taught computer skills at Horizons in Ridgeland, MS.

John enjoyed a full, active life. He was a member of American Mensa and enjoyed their annual conventions for over 40 years. Hobbies included photography, traveling, hobie cat sailing, wind surfing, was an avid runner and bicyclist, earned a pilot's license for single engine planes, and took family and friends on trips near and far.

Preceded in death by his parents, he is survived by his partner of 30 years, Tom Allen, and by his extended family members, classmates, Tau brothers, Army and work colleagues.

A memorial will held on April 5th, 2025 at Parkway Funeral Home and Cemetery, 1161 Highland Colony Parkway in Ridgeland, MS. Service will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by graveside military honors.
