On July 2, 2022, Joan Rouse Salter, age 83, passed away peacefully in her Madison home while surrounded by family. Joan, who was also known as Jo, Jody, and Jo Ann, was born on August 4, 1938, in Arkansas and grew up in Poplarville, Mississippi. At the time of her passing, Joan had been married to her beloved husband James for almost sixty-six years. Joan deeply loved her family and cherished her many friendships. She also greatly enjoyed traveling, gardening, bird watching, and cooking. In 1968, Joan and James joined Broadmoor Baptist Church, where four generations of their family now attend.
For much of her career, Joan worked in both the Lamar County and Hinds County Chancery Clerk’s Offices, where she served as a deputy chancery clerk.
Joan is preceded in death by her parents, Ellis and Bonnie Rouse; her son, Dr. James Salter, Jr.; her brother, H.K. Rouse; and her sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Bob Burge. Left to cherish her memory are her husband, James; her daughter, Jan Gilbert (Roger); her granddaughter, Lindsey Watkins (Will); her grandson, John Gilbert (Alaina); her great-granddaughter, Avie Grace Watkins; her great-grandson, Wyatt James Gilbert (due in September 2022); her brother, Clayton Rouse (Shirlene); her sister-in-law, Nell Rouse; Steven Holbrook; and other family, including several beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 5, 2022, at Broadmoor Baptist Church, 1531 Highland Colony Parkway, Madison, Mississippi. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. with the service to follow at 11 a.m.; burial to follow at Parkway Memorial Cemetery in Ridgeland, Mississippi.
