Janet enjoyed a 22 year career with the Mississippi Development Authority Tourism Division serving as the Program Manager for Golf. She promoted Mississippi internationally and served as a liaison for two Mississippi PGA Tour tournaments. Previously, she was employed for many years at Delta Air Lines.
She was honored to be the first woman to receive the Carpenter-Lindsay Award from the PGA Gulf States section and Mississippi chapter, which is awarded to individuals who have unselfishly served and supported the game of golf.
Janet loved her family and friends, her home state of Mississippi and golf. She was one of Mississippi’s “true treasures” with a sincere, warm heart, radiant smile and a gift for making others feel comfortable and welcomed.
She retired last summer to spend time with Alan, her husband of 37 years. Together, they have loved traveling and playing golf with friends and spending time with family. Janet will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and her brother, Glenwood “Bud” Nelson.
She is survived by her husband, Alan Ray Leach, her son, A. Cooper Leach (Roberta) and her grandchildren Brooks and Clay Leach of Selma, AL. She is also survived by her brothers and sisters Dennis Nelson of Hurley, Carey (Evelyn) Nelson of Cumbest Bluff, George Nelson of Lucedale, Diane Gibson of Hurley, and Joy (Raymond) Hunter of Gulfport, and numerous nephews and nieces.
Visitation will be at 1pm on Saturday, March 11th at Parkway Hills United Methodist Church in Madison, MS., followed by a memorial service at 3pm with the Reverend Bruce Case officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Friends of Children’s Hospital.
