Dr. James Richard Cavett Jr.

Dr. James R. ("Jim") Cavett, Jr., died Friday, June 1, at Baptist Medical Center at the age of 92. Jim was a Belhaven native and an almost-lifelong resident of Jackson. He graduated from Central High School In 1937 and continued his education at Millsaps College receiving a bachelor's degree in 1941. While at Millsaps he met Clara Matthews Porter, and in 1943 the college sweethearts were married. Jim pursued his medical degree at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, PA,

graduating in 1945.

Dr. Cavett served in the Navy at Bethesda Naval Medical Center and at Pensacola Naval Air Station. Upon returning to Jackson, he practiced general medicine at the ShandsO'Ferrall Clinic on Congress Street, leaving after more than a decade to undertake a residency in internal medicine at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

With three other physicians, he founded the Internal Medicine Group where he continued to practice until retirement. For most of those years he was the campus physician for Millsaps College, and he served as the Medical Director for the former Lamar Life Insurance Company. He was very active in the alumni associations of Central High School and Millsaps College. Millsaps honored Dr. Cavett with the Jim Livesay Outstanding Alumnus Award. The Cavetts have long been active members of Galloway Memorial United Methodist Church.

Along with his wife Clara, Dr. Cavett leaves behind his beloved sister, Virginia Cavett Parsons Hogan; three children: Lucy Cavett Cobbe (Charles), Clint Cavett (Connie), and Rick Cavett (Melissa); eight grandchildren: Lucy Baldwin, Janet Hulsey, Elliott Cavett, Elizabeth Goeller, Richard Cobbe, Sam Cavett, Thomas Cavett, and Virginia Belouze; and seven great grandchildren.

Services will be held at Galloway Memorial United Methodist Church, Monday, June 4 at 11:00a.m. Visitation, also at Galloway, will be Sunday from 3:00p.m. to 5:00p.m, and Monday from 10:00a.m. until service commences. Inurnment will be at Galloway.

Memorials may be made to a charity of your choice.
