He is survived by his wife, Mary Katherine Porter; his son, David Glyn Porter; his son, Adam Douglas Porter; his father, Glyn Belton Porter, Sr.; his mother, Julia Nell Porter; his sister, Gale Porter Landrum; his sister, Gloria Porter Parham; his sister, Alice “Lynn” Porter English; his brother, Henry Thomas “Tom” Porter; and many close friends.
Glyn, commonly referred to as “Boy”, was born in Columbia, MS and raised in Jackson, MS. He graduated from Murrah High School in 1969, despite failing 12th grade Typing due to his passion for top-water fishing on the Ross Barnett Reservoir. Glyn then attended the University of Southern Mississippi, where he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing. He long claimed that the Lord gave him the “gift of gab”, which led him to a long, successful career as a cement salesman. Glyn was blessed in that he was so good at his job it allowed him to do what he loved – he called it “entertaining customers”, but most people saw it as playing golf.
Glyn loved golf. He leaves behind a membership at Deerfield Country Club and a standing Saturday 10:00 a.m. tee time. Glyn’s golfing memories include: rounds under par, a hole-in-one, he attended 9 Masters tournaments, the U.S. Open and PGA Championship, as well as the Ryder Cup. Glyn was fortunate enough to play courses like Pebble Beach and TPC Sawgrass, though his favorite of them all was Whistling Straits, in Kohler, WI. His favorite memory, though, was from the 2007 Club Championship at Columbia Country Club, where he and his two sons finished 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the Championship Flight. The leaderboard still hangs on the wall in his garage.
Glyn routinely said that his original diagnosis with cancer in 2000 was the best thing that ever happened to him—he found the Lord. If you were to ask him: “Boy, how did you survive another 15 years when they only gave you six months to live?” His answer would be this: “To tell my story.” Glyn loved telling others of his testimony in Christ and the faith, hope and forgiveness that can only be found in Him. At his death, Glyn actively attended First Baptist Church of Madison and loved hearing Bro. Falvey on Sunday mornings (despite Glyn’s selective hearing which never occurred during sermons, but only when his wife or sons were talking).
Glyn’s life will be remembered at a funeral service at First Baptist Church of Madison on Saturday, April 30, 2016 at 10:00 am. Visitation will be held Friday, April 29, 2016 at Parkway Funeral Home in Ridgeland, MS from 5:00 to 8:00 pm and Saturday from 9:00 am until service time at First Baptist Church of Madison. He will be laid to rest at a family cemetery in Columbia, MS at 2:00 pm, following the service on Saturday.
