He was born December 5, 1925, in Huntingdon, Tennessee, to Irene and Robert Chambers.
He served as a Corporal in a mortar squad in the United States Marines Corps during World War II and fought in the South Pacific campaign. He began his military service as a boy at 18 years old and was honorably discharged as a man at the age of 20 years old. He was proud to serve as a Marine and considered it an honor to fight for his country during his service. He graduated with a major in accounting from Bethel College in Mckenzie, Tennessee, on a G.I. Bill Scholarship. He met, and later married, Vivian J. Chambers in Huntingdon, Tennessee. He was married to Vivian for 63 years until she went to be with The Lord on December 23, 2011. He had a successful career as a controller and chief accounting officer with several companies, including a furniture manufacturing division of Sears Roebuck and Company.
He was a longstanding member of Colonial Heights Baptist Church. He loved The Lord with all of his heart and soul.
His interests included family, friends, and golf. He was known on the golf course for his short game, and on July 11, 1996, at the Jackson Country Club, he shot a round of 68 at the age of 70 years old. He said his ultimate goal in golf was to shoot his age and on this day he bested that goal by 2 strokes.
George is survived by his daughter, Dianne Chambers; son, Tom Chambers and spouse; 6 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, August 22, 2014, at Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home, 1161 Highland Colony Parkway, Ridgeland, MS 39157. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 21, 2014, and an hour before the memorial service.
